It must be a lasting album that infulences music and will be known as great for many years to come. Something great does not need fame to make it great; an album's popularity should not be an album quality criterion.

With that being said, I haven't a clue since there's so much good stuff. Scream Bloody Gore, Ride The Lightning, The Number Of The Beast all come to being very good and influential.

There are a few albums in the last century that have influenced my view on technical metal forever. The saddest part is that most people who claim to enjoy metal will probably not have even heard of them and in their ignorance they miss some of the greatest sounds of ever created in the metal scene ever.

The first would be "The Trees Are Dead and Dried Out Wait For Something Wild" by SikTh. Mathcore at it's finest.

The second album (...and my favourite album of all time) would be "The Hidden Words" by Fellsilent. I think it's illegal for music this good to be so underrated. It should also be illegal for a band this good to break up without releasing a second album.

The third album would be "Februus" by Uneven Structure. This album is immense, god only knows how good their second album is going to be.

Other albums that really stand out in the metal scene would include,

Periphery's self-titled album.

TesseracT's album "One".

Animals As Leaders self-titled album.

"The Discovery" by Born Of Osiris.

"Take To The Skies" by Enter Shikari

That should about cover about a third of the greatest metal releases of the last century and a half.

Reign in Blood- Slayer, to me is the most powerful metal album, I Love every song n it and it has some balls to it, Slayer can't go wrong with it. Otherwise I would also go with System Of A Downs Toxicity, all song on it are great and lasting, also SOAD's flowing base helps blast it into the history books. Other notable ones would Be anything from Iron Maiden, Slayer as I mentioned before, Alice Cooper the grandfather of metal, Metallica even though I'm not a fan of them, all have lasting amazing albums that help shape metal.

Does DSBM count? "Fallen" by Burzum is a fucking masterpiece. Listening to Jeg Faller as we speak.

Anything from Iron Maiden and Metallica... as well as one of my favourite albums, Iowa by Slipknot. While recording Iowa, the members were experiancing the hardest times of their lives... The lead singer drank heavily and nearly commited suicide. The resulting album has such hate and power behind it, I find it beautiful.

Led Zepplins Presence is my fav. My mom is an original headbanger from the 70's. She has 372 vinyls most are early heavy metal.
