[First off, I did a quick search on VT and couldn't find a thread exactly like this one, but if any of you guys know of one please feel free to just link that one and lock this one- sorry if I ended up double posting :P ]

Hey y'all!

So, one thing I've always been kind of curious about is the link between circumcision practices and religious beliefs. As an agnostic myself I have very little experience with doctrine and beliefs, so I was hoping to get y'all's experiences!

If you wouldn't mind answering these few questions, that would be swell!

Religion/Religious Affiliation:
Circumcised or not:
Are there any requirements or doctrines regarding circumcision in your religion that you are aware of?

Thanks guys- just a curious guy trying to understand the world!

------

[Edit:] Lol guess it's only fair I post my own answers:

Religion/Religious Affiliation: Agnostic
Circumcised or not: circumcised
Are there any requirements or doctrines regarding circumcision in your religion that you are aware of? Nope... perks of being uncommitted :P ?

I am Christian - (Lutheran)
I am uncut. It was a family choice.
I do believe that Jewish faith and Muslim faith require males to be circumcised.

- affirmatively not a believer in any religion but raised Jewish
- circumcised
- It's set forth in the Book of Genesis in the Bible (part of the Jewish Torah) and it's a universal practice among Muslims and even some branches of Christianity. But it was apparently done for thousands of years before the advent of those religions. So it has a basis beyond religion.

I am Catholic and am cut.

In Christianity, there is no requirement to do it, as you can see in the bible (1 Corinthians 7):
18Was a man already circumcised when he was called? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a man still uncircumcised when called? He should not be circumcised. 19Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commandments is what matters.

In Islam, as far as I know, it's different. In the Sunna, there is the obligation to do it. Sunnis as well as Shiites do it. For Shiites and most Sunnis, it's "Wajib" (mandatory). For some Sunnis (in Hanafite and the Malikite school), it's "Sunna Muakkadah", (highly recommended).

Christian (Methodist) and I'm cut. It's not a requirement, but my parents did it anyways. I don't really care though.

I'm catholic and uncircumcised. Does anyone know why the Jewish and Muslim faiths require it? What is the purpose?

Muslims do it because Mohammed was said to be born without a foreskin (actually this does happen, foreskins can be long or short). For the Jews, it was a tribal mark (the Egyptians already practiced it).

seems like the religion/nationality of the parents is probably what matters for this question, except for those few ppl who chose to get circumcised when they were older

my parents are not religious (nor is anyone in either side of my family), but they are American so of course I was circumcised

I am uncut and . I am born to a HINDU family( though i am a rationalist, atheist). In Hinduism there is no ritual of circumcision. some people cut themselves for medical purpose. There is a ritual of castration when somebody becomes a SANNYASI or monk.Iknow that muslims need to cut

MY opinion is rather than religious purpose one can go through circumcision if it is needed for curing certain diseases.
