A 14-year-old Sydney boy has pleaded guilty to splashing his nine-year-old neighbour with petrol and setting him alight.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, on Monday admitted setting the younger boy ablaze in the driveway of a Daceyville home, in Sydney's east, in December 2006.

The pair were using petrol to light cherries in a plastic container when the older boy kicked the fire over, causing it to spread.

In an earlier hearing, police claimed he splashed fuel on the nine-year-old's back and chased him with a lighter, shouting: "I'm going to light you on fire ... I'm going to kill you".

The child suffered third-degree burns to 20 per cent of his body as a result.

The teenager on Monday pleaded guilty to one count of malicious wounding before Downing Centre District Court Judge Peter Berman.

He will be sentenced on a date to be fixed.

Wow. I wonder what really went on.

Did the kid accidentally do it, or did he have a moment of phsychosis is my question.
