View Full Version : Serious question regarding North Korea

I'm not positive if this is a debate topic or not, but here goes:
After reading more about North Korea, I learned that prison officials deliberately starve, beat, and kill inmates. If I'm not mistaken, that is basically what happened in the Holocaust to people... So how come no one has done anything to stop what's happening? It doesn't have to be the US like it too often is. It can be anyone.. Russia? UK? I mean, North Korea is in violation of basic human rights, no? Some one should stop the suffering.

North Korea is Paradise. There are no problems there.
On a more serious not, I actually wonder the same thing all the time.

Some of the same things going on in the N. Korea prison camps are going on in Guantanamo...
The reason why nothing has been doing yet is because they wont listen. We've done the whole economic sanction thing, and they are still making ridiculous threats and missile launches. You might say use force but its too many nukes on the line to do that...

North Korea is practically a prison state where the quality of life is ealy 20th century and you have no freedom at all.
Why not go stop them? It's not like they have nuclear weapons or anything....

It's the most common tactic used by politicians to answer a question with another question...
'What do you think about Guantanamo bay?''
''It's not as bad as North Korea, we need to get the UN to sort that out-it's a human rights abuse''
It's just like how after WW2 we marched German concentration guards in front of courts and tried them for crimes against humanity. Did we do that for the soviet guards who worked in the equally oppressive gulags?
On the actual issue I'll admit that what is happening in GITMO is no way as bad as NK-I'll be clear in that. North Korea has a brutal network of camps which well as said in the OP torture, starve and kill political prisoners. But realistically what can we do? We can summon them in front of the ICC to answer for their crimes-they simply won't turn up, we can try and impose more sanctions-we've already starved their country to death. The only remaining thing to do is to carry out a full military attack which which cost millions of pounds, thousands of lives and the security of an entire region.
It saddens me to say this but I best hope is that some ambitious officer in the North Korean army shoots Kim Jong Un

Because NK is friends with China and no one on earth is stupid enough to screw with china. That and the fact that with the sheer amount of munitions pointed at South Korea, if anyone did something against the north then the South would get hit hard and that's something no one's willing to risk.

I do really hope some ambitious rational NK officer stages a coup to seize power.

you have too much faith in the army (of any nation) ma comerad. Especaly in Korea such an event is unlikely because of the stalin stiled cleen up operatins ech new sucsesor of the throne has.

I know. Stalin had great officer purges, it wouldn't surprise me if North Korea has them.

The truth is it's not that easy to say "Oh yeah, we're gonna invade this place and bring democracy there, lerooooooooooy jenkins!" because in the first place, there is a lot of expense in any war, in the second place you are still putting lives in risk, and in the third place if they're not disturbing the international community, as selfish as we must be, we obviously won't pester them for that.

That's exactly the problem.
Nobody wants war again.
After the rebuild an recovery, we are the new generation.
I think the reason nobody is taking down north korea is because they are not attacking anybody outside of the country; what happens inside it is their own busines, and they are not part of the UN.
If we attack them first, we declare war.
And I honestly don't want that.

China is an ally of NK and it does have nukes, large army and semi control of the US economy. And this area is in Russia sphere of interest. I am not confident US allies would support a move against NK.

Yes you are correct in that nazi germany did the same, however North Korea is not waging global war. I also believe that the US thinks it's the UN's job to deal with that stuff.

North Korea is allied with China, the U.S. and the UK don't want to start with China (right now at least), and Russia doesn't particularly care about human rights. The UN is clearly not happy with NK, but there are a lot of conflicting alliances in the mix and then there are countries that really just don't want to mess around with Kim Jong Un for the fact that he's more or less a loose cannon who doesn't think anything through nor does he care about the consequences of his actions. Very WWI/WWII like -- scary thought.

I feel like basicly, if any country does anything to NK,
sh*t will explode.
As long as they stay inside their borders we should leave them alone, perhaps the best we can do is limit their contact with other countries, to prevent more allies.

After the more recent allegations of torture, where NK is becoming more comparable to Nazi Germany, I think that's what the UN will do. They'll put heavier sanctions on NK to try to limit their allies and to try to hurt their economy more. Unfortunately I don't think they'll like that -- they may become a little more pushy, maybe even go outside of their borders.

But the issue is no one really knows their military capabilities. We know that their allies are very strong but we have no idea what they are capable of. Sure they have nukes but the ones they've publicly shown aren't very good. But you never know what's behind their closed doors. Maybe if China and Russia come to their senses and side more with the west then maybe we can help the people in there.

As much as we want to help the North Korean people, realistically speaking, there's nothing we can do about it. It will be just be the same crap all over again. A country files a case to the UN, NK rejects it while rambles through the state media, etc.
War might be an alternative but it's not practical nor feasible. With one of the world's largest standing armies, you don't expect that some anti-NK country will get a quick and easy victory.
The final hope lies on a disgruntled NK general who has close ties with Kim Jong Um and with large support from the army. There's nothing better than a classic coup d' etat.
