My twin brother thinks that masturbation is a sin. Even though I'm pretty sure it isn't. We are both Christian. How could I convince him that it isn't?

I think it would be better if you do not bring up the subject and let him discover for himself as he gets older.

I don't think its a sin, and its according to what he thinks is in the bible that calls it sin. There is one passage that everyone (a lot of people) say makes masturbation a sin, that is the story of Onan. Basically what he did was he was commanded by God to impregnate his brothers wife because he had died, and while having sex, he pulled out and ejaculated his "seed" onto the ground. He was killed by God.
EDIT: Forgot to mention people get the idea that its a sin from this passage because when you masturbate you ejaculate outside of a womans vagina, which is what onan did, but that's not why he was killed. If he would've just left his penis in there and put his semen inside her, which probably would've made his orgasm even better lol, we wouldn't have this debate hahaha!! ;)
I think he was killed because of disobiedience, not masturbation. I think its a natural thing and as long as you aren't lusting, youre just doing it because it feels good, you're good.

Yeah I was trying to tell him that and that there is no reference of masturbation in the bible but…he's hard to convince. Although he doesn't know that I masturbate.

but if he doesn't want to do it. let it be.

Another point I wanted to make is: without masturbation, you're body has wet dreams, which is like your body subconsciously "masturbating".
Without masturbation boys wouldn't learn their bodies and be prepared for sex. Sex was made by God for pleasure and reproduction. Masturbation is just one facet of that "pleasure" in my opinion.
Another thing I wanted to say is that its also ok to pull out during sex. Many people pull out and finish on the girls stomach. Onan did it and disobeyed God. If God didn't directly tell you to impregnate the girl you're having sex with, its fair game to shoot wherever.
In Onan's case he should have as I mentioned earlier followed God's orders and did the male's natural response in the last moments of sexual intercourse, which is to get the penis as deep in the vagina as possible right before ejaculation and shoot the semen onto the womans cervix, and impregnate the woman without question. That's how God designed reproduction. Why he pulled out, idk but I hope he enjoyed that orgasm b/c it was his last. LOL

One passage in the Bible isn't the only reason some religious groups view masturbation as a sin. Catholics for one view it as a sin because it violates what they believe is the natural purpose of our sexual organs, which in their view is procreation. Any sexual act outside one for procreation between a married couple is a sin in that view.
I wouldn't bring it up with your brother. I'm sure he does it too. Let him do what he wants.

This is a kind of thing Christians argue with each other about all the time, like any other kind of doctrinal belief. I think Paul talks about that and says something like, its okay for you to sick to your guns but not force a brother to follow the same policy, and let each be convinced in his own mind. Sometimes you have to agree to disagree.

Yeah, i know that one. The sin was that God ordered Onan to get her pregnant, and he kept pulling out instead. So God killed Onan for disobeying the order to impregnate. Has nothing to do with masturbation. If God had a problem with ejaculation outside of the vagina, he would not have designed the male body to automatically ejaculate semen during a wet dream.
When people have to use Bible verses out of context like that, it tells me they do not have a sound Biblical argument.

The reason you can feel guilty when you finish is because of the temporary draining of serotonin from your mind that happens on the release of sexual tension. It's the exact same for sex.

I have to admit, I'm not religious, so when I see these sorts of things, I don't always understand them, but I do respect someone's decision, if that what he believes in. The usual question, would be what specifically in the bible or anywhere in the Christian faith does it specifically make masturbation in itself a sin? It may be the case that you debate that with your brother, and see why he feels it necessary not to, even though most Christians do masturbate (don't they?).

This is a popular question. I don't think its a sin because other animals do it. One of my friends has a monkey type thing. (it's more like a lemur.) and it masturbates all the time. And i have a parrot and i have caught her masturbating. So why would it be a sin for humans?

The Bible does not say anything specifically about masturbation. However, there is one Bible passage that has sometimes been interpreted as a condemnation of masturbation:
Then Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother." But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother. What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also. (NIV, Genesis 38:8-10)
What Onan did was not masturbation, but a form of birth control known as coitus interruptus. Onan's actual sin was probably his resistance to the Old Testament custom of providing offspring for his deceased brother by impregnating his widow. However a parallel is sometimes drawn between Onan's act and the wasting of the semen that occurs when males masturbate.

No where in the bible does it say it's a sin. Most people think it does because it involves "lusting" upon another woman. It usually is not. If you look up www.boysgrowingupinthelord.com it will tell you it's not.

Well in the Catholic Church it is, saying you are Christian is saying you are a boy, not very specific. If you are Catholic it is a sin, not sure about other denominations of Christianity but I'm sure you can Google it, I think it is a sin though, it's not a big deal though, not like breaking a commandment or killing someone and you can ask for forgiveness very easily so even though it is (or isn't) a sin it's nothing major
