View Full Version : Can a school do this?

Read this article about what recently happened at my school.
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/02/19/freereid-students-rally-behind-minnesota-senior-suspended-over-tweet/

So an anonymous twitter acount posted that the student and an attractive gym teacher made out and thinking nothing of it replied "actually, yes" meaning it to be sarcastic. They school heard about it and suspended him for a long time where it made the most sense for the student to enroll somewhere else. The school ruined this kid's life and the teachers out of pedophile charges. The school also does not have any proof this ever happened and I'll tell you knowing the teacher she would never do that.

Also the kid has never been in trouble before. Knowing the teacher as I have had her at three separate years I know she would never do that.

Shakes head,if he didn't actually make out with the teacher then he should not have posted that tweet.

That kid can actually move on with his life ,his life is not the one that's ruined..it's the teachers life that's ruined if it's not true and even if it is true.

Also if it is true the school is very much within it's rights to do what it did.

1) they have to protect the other male students.

2) there are state and federal laws that prohibit what the student and teacher did if it's true

3) Plus there are school rules that deal with suck stuff.

Also if he lied when he said what he said then the students should not be backing him, they should be backing the teacher, the boy on the other hand if it's a lie what he tweeted should be punished for coating that theacher their job and their reputation because that teacher will have to deal with that for the next 10 to 20 years or so having to register as a sex offender and where ever they move notifying the people of the area if it turns out the boy is lying.

So hows life is really ruined there if it's a lie? Not the kids life but the teachers life.

To be honest, I dont think that its a correct move on the schools part to act out on just a tweet. They should atleast investigate into it.

My state on the news? weird...

In short, no. A student should be allowed to say what they want about a teacher. It's just this teency little thing called freedom of speech. :|

Blame Penn State, schools and colleges are just shitting themselves about someone 'reporting' a sexual crime and then the school failing to act because if it did emerge that this teacher had done anything the heads would be rolling.

I know it looks pretty stupid but the school have a legal requirement

Will you read what you just said?

If it had happened the teacher would not have said a thing simply because said teacher would have gotten in trouble.

From whats going on the teacher had nothing to do with the school doing what they did.

Wrong while I do agree with freedom of speech,it does come with RESPONSIBILITY,meaning you say something about someone that's not true you should face the results of it.

And you should not say something that's not true if you know it could hurt someone else..thats just called being respectful and being an adult which is what a teenage really is a young adult, and teens should be treated like a young adult which means they mess up they should pay the price for it.

I bet if the teen lied and teacher proves it any measures taken to punish that teen will be opposed by his family and most assuredly it will be opposed by teens everywhere over the net who think he should be punished for ruining her life and career!

Stop double posting. ~Steven

Well he should have kept his mouth shut or atleast pointed out that it was a lie being said ! He had a moment of stupidity and now he's paying for it!
and even though he said it in a sarcastic manner he has ruined that teachers life for ever,so his being suspended is just a small part of the punishment he should get for his stupidity!

yeh yeh I know there are teens that feel he's getting the shaft, but none of them are screaming about the teacher getting unfairly punished for a teens stupidity!

and yes if your stupidity ruins another persons life you should be punished for your stupidity.

Um hello lets just say it's a lie that got them both in trouble you do know if found guilty she will have to register as a sex offender for the next 15-20 years.

Also if not found guilty of it all back ground checks will show that she was arrested for it and therefore she was accused of it.

Use that brain you are endowed with for something beyond texting on a cell phone...yes her life is ruined in the job market an arrest with out conviction is as good as guilty! So where do you say her life was not ruined,oh wait your probably not working yet or don't have family or friends with family who has had to deal with stuff like this

The anonymous twitter account did lie. She was not arrested for it she was questioned about it. On the off chance it did happen then yes her life is ruined but it was a "joke" by an anonymous student. Since she will be found innocent any future job she would apply for she would simply explain the situation and nothing more would be thought of it. Reid on the other hand will have a really tough time getting into a college and having a decent job even though he is a National Jrs Honor Society member.

I also do have a job and I am sure that if I was found innocent of this I would still have my job the next day.

Take it from the son of a teacher, this is going to follow her. In all seriousness. "Explaining the situation" will never work. There will always be that doubt. This teacher has that tied to her now. There's no going back.

Kids deserve to get punished. I'm not sure who said it, but while he does have freedom of speech, he has a RESPONSIBILITY! He abused it! All of your school knew the tweet was sarcastic, I'm sure of that. However, what happens when it gets retweeted? What happens when kids from other schools see it? There's no context. There was a tweet that said he and the teacher made out, and a separate tweet from him confirming it. You can't argue the tone of written text. Its written, which leaves it open for interpretation.

The school had every right to do what they did. 100% no doubt about it.

However, as far as your friend goes, calm down. If he's in NJHS he shouldn't be anymore. Its an HONOR society for goodness sake. He's proven he isn't worthy of it quite frankly. Soon no one will remember this. He'll be fine. I just hope he's learned his lesson. Teacher/student relationships shouldn't be joked about. Its a very serious accusation.

I guess your right about it but the school has chosen to ruin his future when he was not even the one to start this rumor and hurt the teacher. I also agree that he deserves to be punished but suspending him for 8 weeks will not help him learn from his mistake.

Um you'd be surprised at what being suspended that long will do.

Think about it his future is ruined yes but he choose to not squash a rumor thus ruining a ladies life and her future.

remember this:

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. It's a fundamental principle of Newtonian physics but equally applicable to life itself.

he created an action by saying the rumor is true, and look whats happened.

yeh and that's part of the reaction i'm talking about too, every thing that's happened since he had to lie is part of the chain reaction.

funny thing about chain reactions you never know whats going to happen or when and where it's going to stop and how bad it'll be either way.

I understand why the law would get involved if the student said he was going to like kill the teacher or something that would actually suggest a life being in danger, but if he just called him or her a nasty name, then it is not up to the law and that's where freedom of speech applies. Being respectful is an important thing, but it's not and should never be forced. It's called freedom of speech because people are allowed to say their teacher is a whore, even when it's not true. Look at extreme religious organizations like the Westboro Baptist Church. They don't tell the truth.

1) wasting their time,
2) causing another persons reputation to be harmed

3)making the other person the victim of slander and false accusations.

Yes the kid should be punished by the law!

depends on what the schoolboard decides. Parents sign some shit when the student is admitted. In the contract, the student is giving up and getting rights as a student. Honestly it depends.
but in general i think the kid should be let back in, that is, if everything Fox news is correct and unbiased, which it rarely is, so i'm not going to pass an opinion.
