View Full Version : Male cheerleader here : Should I shave body hair ?

Danielle DaniYell

Hi, I'm Danielson, nickname Danielle(Dany Yell) . I'm a male cheerleader and very passionate about it , but unfortunately my Catholic school doesn't have a male cheerleading team , so I have to cheer as the only boy in the girls-only team . Today , when I went to practice with the girls , they told me , that due to puberty , body hair had grown on my arms , face , legs , and all over, and all of them told me to remove them . As I do all the same moves which girls do , I understand their problem , but I'm also not very enthusiastic about doing away with my body hair . I'm straight , but love cheerleading to it's core , and will leave the team on absolutely no grounds unless something drastic happens . Anyhow , I know it will definitely become a problem if I want to represent outside my school , but give me suggestions about it ?
What shall I do ?

You shouldn't have to remove your body hair. My main thing would be what your uniform is for it ? If your body is on show a lot maybe shave those parts

Actually as I'm the only guy in the team , I am required to wear the same cheerleading upper top that girls wear ( sleeveless ) . But I wear shorts as the girls wear skirts . So yeah , most of my legs and all of my arms are visible .
And do I have to shave my face at least , or is it okay wihout it ? Please help me .

Not sure about cheer leading as its not really a thing over here, however i know male gymnasts and dancers often shave their pits and legs because their shown quite abit and its considered aestetic. However its up to you but if i were you i would, how ever id leave my arm hair because its not too noticable abd abit unreasonably to be expected to do so. Anyway good luck!

I wouldn't shave it. You are still a boy, and so it's completely okay.
You could try and become sort of a "special member", so you get your own uniform, but in the same style as the girls so it's clear you still belong to the team.
What I mean with "special member" is, that your team creates a new choreography with you at the end jumping in front of the girls or something like this, so you are marked as something unusual (positive) so you are the special feature other teams don't have.

You are the only boy in the team, so I don't see why you should shave your body to you look like one of the girls, I think that's completely stupid. Stay as you are the special feature in the team!

Thanks a lot . I've went round and round about shaving it or not and still am in doubt .

Can you expand a little bit about your special feature suggestion ? And about my uniform , I don't know how it could be something similar . Anyhow , this is a cool suggestion, and a little bit of expansion will help a lot .
Thanks a lot !!!

Who picked u for the squad? If it was a coach or someone else in charge
what do they have to say about it? The girls r acting very snobbish and u shouldnt listen to them as long as u do ur job well-I would bring it up to the person in charge and c what they have to say about it. If u have to catch some of the girls while u cheer and they keep telling u what to do-advise them to watch their step.

Hi ! Actually the coach picked me up as I tried out for it . No catching here as we all have to do the exact same moves .
I don't think that the girls are forcing me into it , just implying that it'll be for the betterment of the team . I had already talked to the coach and she more or less seemed to agree with the girls , and gave me some points as to why I should cut my body hair to "fit in" . She has said that i don't have to do it if it's not possible , but the fact that our school is adamant on not changing the routines for this session at least , and including moves specifically for boys , and due to that I still have to wear the same top as the girls , the argument she gave was that she can't distinguish me from tye rest of the team .
I'm in a fix really .

Yeah , I know man , but the other option would be to just quit the team as my arguments for this are not on the level of their's

What I mean is, that you shouldn't try to fit in the team by becoming a almost-girl, but stand by being a boy. You like to be a cheerleader, and you want to stay in the team. But for this, you should not change yourself in such a strong way. Just say "yeah, I am the boy in the team" and be proud of it (and you can really be, because as you said, a cheerleader-boy is pretty rare, and that makes you unique).

Make a new show where you get a special, unique position as a boy, so its clear for anyone to see, ah they got a boy in their team. Don't try to act like a girl if you don't like to, just be the one you are.

And on top of it, in my opinion, it isn't important at all wether a cheerleader member has hairs or not. It's the presentation, the show that matters, isn't it?

Yeah , I know man , but the other option would be to just quit the team as my arguments for this are not on the level of their's
If your hairs are the only problems for them and they put you under such a preasure you should think about switching the team, buddy...
The way these girls behave is just unfair.

U cant help it if u r hairy-unless u look like a chia pet
but have u asked the coach if she has any ideas of what
u should do or what is expected of u? I would shave my face
I think that would b mandatory-other than ur arms u cant help
it if ur legs r hairy-ur a guy-if u have black hair on ur legs y not
bleach it. I cant c that they can force u to shave anything then
they shouldn't have any guys on the squad.

Definably shave your pits, but arms and legs depends on how hairy and how dark the hair. imo

Well, actually they don't have any other guys . I was a special selection for the team due to my tryouts proving good . Well, the coach , as she told me expects me to at least make an attempt to fit in with them by shaving myself and trying to become a part ,give it some time , and if it doesn't work, she has promised that they would try to somewhat incorporate some moves which are not so girlish , and would try to make some adjustments for me . That's the deal she gives me .

The problem is that arms and legs are much more hairy than a boy my age .
Especially leg hair are dark and dense actually

Then I would suggest you shave. Personally, I like the clean neat look and shave my body for summer when I like to go to water park. I notice a lot of my college mates also like the look at the pool. So, yeah, shave. As others have said, a lot of male athletes shave for the aesthetics.

I'm very hairy , especially on my legs . My arms are also much more hairy than others , and underarm hair are thick too

You not wear like a longer under top type thing ?

Honestly, how much hair you have isn't important. That's just superficial from those girls in your team.
And the coach threatening you in such a way is unfair and unprofessional. No one should talk to his team (or a member) in this manner.

Do you wear the cheerleader dress they wear? Cuz then you might probably shave to fit into the group better otherwise keep your hair and show your individuality.

Do you mean tank top ?
To be clear, I wear shorts , and a sleeveless shell with a tank top underneath it

I wear the same upper clothing in a shell top and a tank top underneath , but definitely I don't wear a skirt . Instead, I'm made to wear shorts which match with their skirts .

I agree with "twin" here-tho if u want to continue
on the team I would not shave anything but like
I said before bleach the hair on ur legs and I don't
think it would matter even to trim ur underarm hair.
Ur not a swimmer on a team where u r looking for
speed. I still say the coach selected u for the squad
but ur something like a scapegoat in them not
accepting u as u-she should have told u before
she selected u as a male cheerleader what they
expected and rules for being accepted. I still
find it wrong.

Well, I have the choice now .
Shave them off or get off the team .
Also, how would bleaching help ?

if you want to be on the team, shave it off. it is for looks and while it is normal for guys to have arm and leg hair, in that situation, it is probably also common for them to shave as well.

If ur heart is in it then shave but still it is
not right-they r giving u a raw deal. U want
to cheer-so do as they ask-it really sucks.

I cant c shaving arm hair-mostly all guys have
arm hair even some girls-bleaching leg hair if
that is one of the probs would not eliminate it
but disguise it-and the top u have to wear-ive
seen male cheerleaders wear like a tee shirt
under a team halter or they get the males a
special team uniform.

If it means so much for you to be a cheerleader on this all girl squad I would say to just do what the girls ask you and shave all your body hair. Personally though, if it were me and it would upset me and give me grief I wouldn't do it. But then this isn't about me. Shave your body hair.

I care a lot about cheerleading in general , all girls' team or not doesn't make a difference , as I'm passionate about it .

Tell me about the team halter thing .
Yeah it sucks man , but really if there was even 1 other boy , I would've requested for a special uniform , but none there is . So the top is the currently the least of my worries .
Really this thing gives me so much of extra stress .I already have to deal with all the worries which males do , and also extra burden which other boys don't have , about practicing motions , getting bullied, going on diet , and losing weight .
My passion for cheerleading has by far surpassed them all though , so I hope I've the strwngth to go through this too .

Okay...why do you have to diet? If you don't look fat, or are skinny...then I'd sorta be worried, thijs slowly seems more like they just want the right to say they have a boy, but then hide the boy. Considering she chose you, you must be in good shape. Also, I'm sorta indifferent to shaving, my dad did a lot of sports, and he shaved. Though with the burdens, I've been made fun of or gotten looks just due to my looks-Conservative central-. I've been told since I was five to gain weight...just to lose it all by getting sick.

This thing was on my mind all night and I think it is crazy-not u but
ur school. Don't tell me u r wearing a dress like the girls-my school
does not have any boy cheerleaders but another school here does-they
have two male cheerleaders and they have two sets of clothes one is
like a sweatpants style-long sleeve sweat shirt and pants and the other
is a halter tank top short sleeve-the pants r short pants up to the knee
like the swim trunks with the tie strings at the navel. I would say thats the standard uniform for a male cheerleader.

If I were u I would get a mens shaving trimmer and trim ur pit hair as
close as u can-shave ur arm and leg hair if u really care about cheerleading
but I think u would look worse over time when all this dark starts growing
back-it is my opinion-ur a man-they r treating u like another girl-ur coach
is an idiot.

BTW-u mentioned bullying-R they bullying u? If so forget the cheerleading-Bro.
