i just read "proposed" and "consider" ...
also i'm more into some of the users comments
Even if the world got all its energy from clean renewables, (which we need to do), we would still be on track to destroy all the rain-forests, fish out the oceans, fill them with plastic, and mine all the usable minerals. We are doubling the rate of this every 20 years. Getting greenhouse gasses under control is just the first step we need to take if there is to be any real future. It is not looking good.
What really happened in this meeting between Pacific Islands Leaders (PIL):
PIL1: Ok, dudes, those western bastards are at it again.
PIL2: What?
PIL1: They are using our name again to promote their alarmist ideology. We are going to "disappear" from the face of the earth, this time. Sea Level Rise, or whatever.
PIL3: Fuck, that upsets me. It's really the only time those bastards remember us. That and when a fucking hurricane screws one of us. You know, always an opportunity to spread imagined connections between natural phenomena and global warming.
PIL2: We should do something this time around, we can't let this abuse continue.
PIL3: I know, I know, why don't we troll them? Let's say we are about to sign a treaty on... on...
PIL4: I know!! Ban Fussil Fuels!
PIL1: Hahaha! Great idea, PIL3 and PIL4.
PIL2: Great. Let's do it. Can we get the only meaningful islands to get on board, Australia and New Zealand?
PIL1: Hmmmmmm, I don't think so. They don't think this is a laughing matter. They have real economies, you know.
PIL2: Right, they have to take into account the markets. Ok, we do it without them, I'm sure we can pull it off.
PIL1: Yeah, those environmental alarmists believe in anything. It's gonna be a laugh
PIL3: I'm seeing it already: internet fora full of praise to our "attitude". I'm betting some will say this is the "beginning of the change".
PIL2: Just imagine how the guardian will look like
PIL1: Hahahahahahahha
PIL4: Hhahhhahahaha
PIL2: Idiots.

The thing is, most pacific islands already use very few fossil fuels. Not because they are environmentally conscience, but simply because of resources. The volcanic islands have very little coal and gas, due to the way they were formed, volcanoes and all.
Honestly, I think they are just trying to become energy independent, and look good while doing it. Most of their coal and oil comes from other countries, it makes sense. That's why Japan has so many nuclear reactors, they don't have any natural fuels.

I agree it would be more significant if it was country who have oil, but its still a step in a right direction.

I think it is progress, it will also produce data that can be used to pursue larger countries.
