View Full Version : Shaving pubes dangerous and unhealthy

This is probably more of a general health thing than a puberty thing.
There are a whole bunch of articles by respected medical authorities on the inadvisability of shaving pubes, for girls especially.
It seems the hair has a real function in keeping bacteria out and shaving cuts and injuries constitute a substantial percentage of admissions for genital area infections.
I don't remember that my mom ever did and my sister doesn;t and we got to talking about it and my mom said google it, and wow. It's really true. It's unhealthy.
What do you think about this?

Is the problem as significant to guys as well?

The gist of the articles is about women but when I shaved I broke out with a rash and ingrown hairs to the point I didn't want to do it again.

It's not really unhealthy. I mean, yes, you increase the odds of some skin infections, but be safe, use a clean razor, stay clean and you'll be fine. It's well worth it. Shaving your legs has an infection risk too. It's a risk we take to have "clean" bare smooth skin (and it feels way way better too!). A VERY minor risk at that.
Dude!! Read the science.

I use an electric hair shaver/trimmer thingy, not a razor with blades if that makes any difference... idk. Never gotten an infection.

Now that you mention it I do seem to get a bunch of ingrown hairs if I shave it, it's probably best if I stop then I guess

I think only for girls because chaffing and dirt is more of a problem for them than for men, either way if it was truely unhealthy then we would all know by now.

Article in today's NY Times:
(Referring to a doctor)She and other doctors have seen grooming-related cases of folliculitis, abscesses, lacerations, allergic reactions to waxing burns, as well as vulvar and vaginal infections. One study has noted that 3 percent of emergency room visits for genitourinary trauma are a result of grooming.
There's a reason God made you with pubic hair.

it CAN be unhealthy...true
but there are ways to prevent unwanted problems that could result from shaving completely.

I agree with the post writer. The razor is a dangerous tool and make lot of problem when we're clumsy. Better way the body trimmer, or waxing by beautician. But I dont see any risk in the hairlessness. We try cloths and regularly groom our body. The bacteria are much smaller than the hairs, how to protect the hair against?

I'd like to see a link to the actual articles you are referring to I'm not quite sure I believe everything you're saying.

Like a lot of stuff on here, this is a total overreaction. l've never heard any medical practioners advising against it.

I've always shaved my pubes, I'm a guy, not sure what the difference makes tbh. I've never had an ingrown hair, I've never cut myself, I've never had any sort of medical problem related to, nor to I know of anyone who has either.
But I'd like to read the articles you mention specifically....

Yea it was rough for me the first couple times. I was itchy and red and it was bad. But I did it again and again and it got easier each time. Where now after a year I have no problem. Bit I mean it only took me like a month or two to get used to shaving my pubes

I haven't had any problems with shaving pubic hair, but I do know too well how when you first do that, it can itch like you would not believe, so I'd use a sensitive skin shaving cream, or something similar to reduce itchiness.

So I think a fair summary of the discussion so far is that yes, there are risks, but this risks are small and that one shouldn't worry about them too much.
What about the benefit, though? Surely before taking any risk at all you have to have a benefit in mind? Many times you believe the benefit is worth the risk and that's fine. I can't help thinking the benefit of pube shaving, certainly for boys, is also overplayed.

So I agree with you on shaving, I just trim but that arguement is silly. Under that logic God made everything perfect. So we don't need haircuts, or get wisdom teeth removed, and the appendix isn't just a silly vestigial organ that can kill us. Sorry dude, don't buy it. The science sure, but the arguement that because God made it that way is silly and lazy.

You can get razor bumps and ingrown hairs, but it's not detrimental to health...

What do you think about this?
it is only a question of faith and a matter of personal hygiene.
