View Full Version : Drivers Test (scared)

I have always had a passion for driving and cars and all that. Last July when I got my permit, I was thrilled that I could finally drive a car even though one of my parents had to be in the car with me.
Well, now I have my drivers test on Thursday, and I'm freaking out. If you're American, then you know how strict the instructors are. I mean, yeah, you could go 33 in a 30 or signal 20 feet before the turn IN REGULAR LIFE, but you do any of that shit on the test and it's an automatic fail. I'm gonna be driving in snowy Minnesota to make matters worse. Oh, and if I don't pass this test, then I have to wait until April to take another.
Bottom line, I need advice from people. What can I do to increase my odds of passing?

I'l be rooting for you Rob - I will pass on this wee bit of advice : Eat a banana...It really actually helps settle you before tests/exams. I swear by it!
Other than that, I'm just a dumb kid and what do I know, so Good Luck!

Choose a DMV office that's completely surrounded by residential areas (if possible). I'm not sure about Minnesota, but in California, all residential streets are 25 unless otherwise posted. The testers also seem to be nicer/easier in the more "quiet neighborhood" areas compared to the urban or commercially placed DMV offices.
They also allow you a 5mph bubble above/below the speed limit during clear conditions; if the conditions are bad, drive a speed that's safe. As far as turning goes, use the 3 second rule and you should be good. Just don't forget to signal.
Lastly, just put yourself in the mindset that everything's gonna be ok; just pretend the tester is your parent! I'm sure you'll do great :)

Strict?
Here if you've got some pretty basic driving skills down, you pass, the instructors are so easy... And I'm not sure if this is a state or a national thing, but at my DMV, they ALWAYS have you do the same things: drive down a residential area, drive down a one-way street, back around a corner, parallel park, they ask how to position your wheels when parking up/down hill, they make sure you know how to check and adjust your mirrors/use wipers/horn/lights/turn signals. They make sure you look at your mirrors when you back out and make sure you follow the right-of-way.
Best thing is to keep calm... and remember, even if you don't pass, it isn't the end of the world. You'll do fine!

They aren't that strict, however some of the instructors here will fail male drivers on their first test even if they do perfect, because they think it's right. It's incredibly annoying and frustrating, since I'll be having my driving test in a little more than a month...

To the OP, be sure to check your laws, because the default for anywhere within city limits where not posted otherwise is 35 here.
