So I've been struggling with college plans recently. I come from a low income family and NO ONE has ever gone to college, so no one knows how to play the "college game". I've come to terms that we can only afford a community college. But recently, my American Sign Language teacher has been teaching me how to play the "college game" and get grants, scholarships, and financial aid. I've been super happy, and I decided I wanted to try to attend California State University Northridge (CSUN) to be a sign language interpreter. Well today I was happy and I wanted my grandma to know, so I told my her about wanting to go to CSUN. She laughed a snarky "yeah right" laugh and asked how I was going to do that?

Ouch...... nice to know I have so much support. My good mood went right to the dumps. Well, it was nice to know happiness while it lasted

You go girl! Do not let your family get you down. You have an opportunity to contribute to the welfare of others through sign language. Make the best of the opportunity and continue to work with teachers and counselors who can guide you toward the achievement of you life goals. I guess being the first in the family to go to college is a new experience for all the family and they are not sure how to respond. Help them understand your goals and try to get them on board with you. Good luck!

Aw, that's mean. It's good that you're getting an education though.

They only say that because they don't know what it's like to be as successful as you in terms of school

I've been in the same situation with multiple family members. My stepmother for example was talking behind my back about how I am just a lazy 17-year old (at the time) and would never accomplish anything. All that just because I didn't work 5 days a week. Instead I was (am) studying economics but that isn't enough in her eyes. You just have to prove them wrong.

I say take it in stride. Spite is a damn good motivator.
