I had a girlfriend about a month ago,well shes not my girlfriend anymore,but our relationship didn't work out so she went to her old boyfriend,and she told me I looked cute but it turns out she lied to me and played with me the whole time ive been with her,so i think she was just saying that to make me feel better,so whenever someone says i look handsome or cute,i think they just say it to make me feel better

I'm sorry you had to go through that.

I always feel like people are trying to make me feel better when they compliment me. Especially when they say that I'm "helpful", or "good" at something, or "a great friend".

I just feel like everyone knows I'm depressed and have low self-esteem and they're just trying to fix it. It's a noble effort, but I can't help but feel a little lied to.

Ironically most people don't lie about things like that, because most people don't have a reason to, or would rather be truthful. Self-esteem is kind of a rocky journey, but I'm right in there with you. Best of luck.
