the old thread dropped out of the posting window so here's a new one.
I know this debate has been done and overdone, but I'd just like to underscore one huge, awesome advantage to legal weed:
PANCHO ABSOLUTELY BLOWN THE FUCK OUT (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/03/03/legal-marijuana-is-finally-doing-what-the-drug-war-couldnt/)
The latest data from the U.S. Border Patrol shows that last year, marijuana seizures along the southwest border tumbled to their lowest level in at least a decade. Agents snagged roughly 1.5 million pounds of marijuana at the border, down from a peak of nearly 4 million pounds in 2009.
if you're gonna buy, buy American.
why exactly?
"Two or three years ago, a kilogram [2.2 pounds] of marijuana was worth $60 to $90," a Mexican marijuana grower told NPR news in December 2014. "But now they're paying us $30 to $40 a kilo. It's a big difference. If the U.S. continues to legalize pot, they'll run us into the ground."
and there you have it. if you don't support legal weed, you're giving Pancho and his chainsaw a meal ticket, so he can keep growing and sawing off heads south of the border.
doubtless this thread will attract impassioned rants from the anarchy krew on the futility of the War on Drugs, so I'd like to add a little coda here: I think the War on Drugs should focus on suppressing the worst drugs such as heroin and meth, and its dealings with cannabis should be restricted to stopping smugglers at the border. relaxing the laws related to marijuana specifically is sensible only because it's a low-risk drug with no particularly heinous social effects. whereas using, say, heroin is at least as unhealthy as having your head chainsawed off by Pancho, hence there's still a good reason to continue suppressing it.
to summarize, LEGALIZE IT so I can toke up and Pancho gets blown the fuck out, win-win.
P.S. build wall
