Hymen and Virginity

My sister came home in tears today (she is 11). She had been out horse riding for like only the second time and to cut a long story short after a trip to the emergency room because of bleeding in her knickers it turns out the horse riding made her hymen tear/ pop. She thinks now that no longer makes her a virgin despite what my mum and I keep telling her to the contrary. So here a quick survey about your hymen and virginity and then I can show her the answers to reassure her.

2. Is your hymen still in tact?
3. If your hymen is not in tact how did it tear/ pop. Sex, masturbation, physical activity etc?
4. Did the breaking of your hymen hurt?
5. Did you bleed? How much and how long?
6. If you broke your hymen from something other than sex did you still consider yourself a virgin?

Just to be clear and reassuring to your sister though, having a hymen and being a virgin are completely, 100% separate. Mine just happened to be intact my first time, but I lost my virginity when he entered me not when it tore.

6. If you broke your hymen from something other than sex did you still consider yourself a virgin? I haven't had sex. Which means yes, I'm still a virgin :)

Do yourself and your sister a favor and lookup the history of the hymen and why people care about it. It is all tied to when women were treated like property and the only way a man could be sure a child was his is if his bride was a virgin. The hymen seemed like a good enough way to ensure virginity. There are places still on this planet where women have their vaginal openings sewn shut so that the husband can "break" the seal on the wedding night. It's barbaric. Sorry for the rant.

Also, Char1999 and everyone else who's posted: your hymen does not pop. It's always intact, unless you're born without one. "Popping" your hymen is just a myth. It can and does tear from thinks like penetrative sex or horseback riding, but it just heals over. It's not a one and done thing. Perhaps I've misread, but what I understood from what you said is the idea that it just completely goes back covering the vagina? But if that were to happen, menstrual fluid would have no where to exit

There are some rare occasions where it does completely cover the vagina, but in those cases, for that reason, it has to be surgically remedied (to my knowledge). The fact that menstrual blood comes out of your vagina would also, in a perfect world, dissuade anyone from still believing this myth, but alas...

Basically, the hymen just stretches. It can also tear, but it will heal. It's not popped and then you're done forever.
