I'm a relatively big guy and, similar to most, am relatively hairy. First of all, is it weird to shave most of the body (chest, back, etc.) and how do you do it. I can't seem to do it without getting ingrown hairs and red bumps.

I use to shave my happy trail but I stopped and now I only shave my pubes and face
But do what you want because it's too much work to worry about what others think

It's normal to shave your body but I don't need to do it yet because I don't have enough. I have shaved my pubes though and to stop getting ingrown hairs and bumps I just use a lot of shaving foam. I'm not sure that you could do this with other parts of your body so maybe try waxing instead of shaving.

I guess it's normal to want to shave your body but remember it's probably going to be something you live with and if you can come to terms with it the quicker the better. Don't be embarrassed about your body, I know that's easier said than done.

I'm a hairy guy. I just kind of accepted it early. I never shave other than my face. I just let my chest and pubes be hairy.

I would not say it is weird to shave your body, and it is a personal preference. Especially as we are heading into summer some guys like to shave their chests and backs before heading into the swimming pool and going shirtless. There is no right or wrong answer to this question and everything goes down to personal preference and how comfortable you are with being hairy.
I would recommend a body hair groomer (http://www.usa.philips.com/c-p/BG2038_41/norelco-bodygroom-5100-wet-dry-body-groomer-series-5000) which definitely can help you with your ingrown hair issues.
