Interesting piece of slang but I wonder if it is old enough to have come from a misconception (no pun intended). When the microscope was invented, one of the first things to be examined under it (or at least documented as having been examined) was semen and thus sperm were discovered. It seems that was shortly before a rise in the whole religious "spilled seed" teaching and a period during which masturbation was demonised even by the medics.

I saw the suggestion on another site that this was because the human egg had not been discovered at that time so people thought sperm were complete potential new lives that just needed somewere to grow, which the woman's body provided. That probably also explains the name "seed" as plant seeds are indeed already fertilised and ready to grow.

It seems strange that no-one wondered why it didn't seem to matter how many your put into a woman you always seemed to get exactly one baby. That's easy to explain now we know that this is because there is one egg but, if anyone had given it serious thought, should have been quite a mystery at the time.
