The opposition has called a massive protest starting February 12 and ending indefinitely, many students from universities have mobilized and refused to return home, 2 dead have already been reported, the "president" in charge Nicolás Maduro has said that anyone who protests without permission will be jailed immediately, however the mass numbers have been giving trouble to the police.

Here are pictures of the protests per city:

What sent them to the streets?

A massive discontent with the current, mostly illegitimate, government.

It's really been a buildup of government screw-ups through the last year, no particular even because it's a pacific protest, not a revolution.

There was open, fair elections less the twelve months ago. The PSUV won - though it was quite close admittedly.

From what I've gathered there's nothing illegitimate about Mudoro's government.

Were you there? Do you have family in Venezuela? My friends and family there told me a lot of things, there were people being brought in from Cuba, people were voting with false IDs, I even have a dead familiar who apparently voted, they were opening the closed voting centres and putting votes in, the electoral entity is the most biased entity in Venezuela, so I stick by my words, Maduro is illegitimate.

snip.

I'd prefer verifiable evidence (preferably as presented by a mainstream source) before I denounce Maduro.

Maduro is illegitimate and I'll say it way more times, the media is censored in Venezuela so you won't be hearing anything bad from there, because it's all bullshit.
