In Germany, the AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) party has won many seats in the Parliament, showing it is a force to be reckoned with rather than just a fringe group. The party leader has capitalised on recent anti immigrant and refugee sentiment to gain support, especially in the rural areas.

Since they cannot make a coalition, their influence is minimal. But the current parties better take this as a warning. This spread of right wing politics is a clear sign that something must change. It's also a worrying time for the EU as the Union will start to be ideologically divided with stronger leftist parties in poorer countries like Greece and Portugal at the same time as stronger right wing parties in the East and North form in nations like Denmark and Poland.
