Hi guys,

I'm straight and this question is more directed at straight guys.

I am attracted to girls and have never been attracted to guys at all, however whenever I compare with my mates or when I'm naked with them at home or the gym I often get a boner. Is this normal? Does this happen to other people too?

I'm confused coz I'm not attracted to them but still get hard so any responses would be great thanks for your help :)

You really can't control erections. Its basically blood running to your penis.

What does your mates say about it?

They sometimes make a joke about it and have a laugh but I am still one of the biggest out of my mates so I also get compliments. I'm not too worried about what others think just more I am confused about what's happening.

I'm gay but you're getting my answer anyway. It's totally normal to get a boner from seeing other guys naked or whatever even if you are straight. It's just hormones really.

I have a straight friend who has the same issue and we have discovered though he is not attracted to guys at all, no matter where he is, when he gets naked he gets a boner and thats just the way it is for him. It has nothing to do with sex or sexuality, its just his bodies response to getting naked. Its normal for him and it happens.

I believe it's normal and you shouldn't worry. Getting unexpected boners anytime and anywhere is just a fact of life for most of us.

Erections can occur anytime , not controllable , and its not a thing to be embarrased about , I walk around erect at school and not most people notice , well , because I have a uniform on I don't wear skinny school pants . Girls just laugh when they see it and I'm like "YAAH BAPE" lol .

Don't be too concerned about this.

I have been watching series of TV programmes on the brain by David Eagleman*. One of the essential ideas of the programme is that whereas animals tend to have fully-wired brains at birth with fixed, instinctive behaviours, human brains are much more flexible and learn as we go along.

Even basic things we think would be instictive, like seeing, are learned. In the case of sight a baby sees a jumble of light and the brain gradually learns to detect edges and shapes and faces etc. and relate what is see to what can be felt etc.

I am pretty sure the same process happens with erections. When an increase in testosterone turns on some parts of the brain concerned with sex there are details left to be sorted out, like when to get erect. To start with we get erect in any situation that could potentially be sexual and then, over time, we learn which ones tend to lead to something for which an erection would be useful, such as sex or masturbation, and which don't and gradually erections become less common and the brain refines the criteria for triggering one.

So in this case maybe there is enough similarity between getting naked in the situations in which you'd rather not get erect and the situations in which, as when you're about to jack off or have sex, it would be useful and your brain hasn't worked out the finer cues for determining which situation is which.

* if uou live in the UK you can still catch this series on BBC iPlayer - BBC Four.

Hasn't happened to me but a lot of people get hard when ever they are naked. They equate nakedness with sex. It's a mental think. They see so much naked por that when they are naked, and especially when others are naked, they think they're gonna get laid and get hard ... even if they they know they aren't gonna get laid. When I first slept naked I always got a boner the first few weeks, eventually my brain just figured I was gonna sleep and not have sex, so I didn't automatically get hard every time. My advice is just try to think of chill stuff, just relax, so u don't get hard.

It's just hormones
Most of us have no control over erections. I have to hide like 10 a day for no reason.

Yes, it's normal for all guys to have this reaction, especially during puberty since we become more conscious of others being naked. It should go away some time after puberty (if you are straight).

Don't worry, I think it's normal. You're naked and comparing, so it's normal to get a bit aroused.

I get many erections during the day for no reasons, I guess it's just teen hormones :)
