I think some sources of info on puberty mention them and fail to mention masturbation leaving you with the impression that a wet dream is a development milestone. Really, the development milestone is starting to ejaculate and it doesn't matter whether you discover that ability through masturbation or a wet dream, you can tick that one off the list either way.

It used to be thought that we dreams happened when your semen had built up to a point where everything was full and the body needed to make some space but there enough flaws in that explanation we can say pretty much that it is an oversimplification. Nevertheless it does seem to be the case that guys who masturbate frequently are less likely to have a wet dream.
