What do you mean by "checking out"? Quite often I watch it spurt out so I already have some idea how big any given load is but I do also tend to just look at where it has landed. I don't usually count the spurts or attempt to measure the volume (as in ml) though I have done both of those on the odd occasion.

The bigger the better. To keep things in perspective orgasms are great and that means each and every contraction whether not it results in a spurt of cum, but I do think the ones that result in a spurt feel better. There is also what is called the emission stage which is when the various glands deliver their component to the prostatic urethra ready to spurt out but just before the contractions begin.
