Girls. Tights, holdups, or stockings

You girls in the USA call tights pantyhose I know. So what is your preference?. Personally I have never worn stockings but the idea of having to wear a girdle to keep them up does not sound appealing. I really like holdups but if I'm wearing a short skirt I sometimes feel a wee bit exposed so I will use tights more often than not. So again, what's your preference?

I have tights but I don't wear them much, they aren't pantyhose, they are thicker, more like leggings with feet!
I like tall socks with short skirts, or just bare legs.
