View Full Version : Being nude in the US

Every once and a while I get angry thinking about how uptight everyone is about nudity in the US. For example, in gym class they gave us 15 mins to change after swimming- what should take about 2 minutes for guys. The reason was because there were "only two stalls and 15 guys in the class". Really? You need a stall to get changed in front of a dozen other guys who are the same age! Total BS. And at other pools when there are not stalls, people wrap themselves so tightly in a towel so people dont see their dick that they almost suffocate- not to mention it takes 5x as long.
When I go stay at a friends house we may change to go to bed into either pajamas or boxers and they will go into another room to do it... why? We might be having a conversation and my friend would be like "just a minute. I need to go change"- so you're going to end the conversation to walk to another room so I don't see you in some loose-ass boxers that I dont give a fuck that you wear.
Sorry about the rant, but that's just kinda how im feeling. Thoughts?

I Completely agree with you. I see it to be more of a problem for guys than girls tho. When girls change in front of each other it's okay it's the "buddy system"
But for guys if we do it its because we are gay. We all have the same parts. It shouldn't matter.

I'm actually abit surprised by this, I've always thought that guys in the US were generally alot more open about nudity. Its the same here in NZ

As we all wish it would be like this it will never.... I
U less u are with really close friends or ppl maybe this openness would happen.... But for example guys would do this cuz they may be afraid of being called "gay" which is totally f'd up(pardon the langaue) in my opinion. We're all human and we all have dicks so what's wrong with just changing really quick in front of others. It needs to change

I thought this too. Quite uptight about it in UK too.

I think this is the reason. If anyone so much as glances at another guy for too long or in the wrong places, they get labelled as gay and are subject to all the torment that comes with that.

at school some boys change under their towel, which doesn't make sense to me because they just took a shower naked with 20 other boys, but whatever. i look, my friends look, and i get looked at. nobody is called out for it, we're just being curious

I agree with you to an extent but in my time on VT, I've learned that people in the US are A LOT more open to things like that than here so good look if you ever come to England.

I have no problem with nudity-I really flaunt of what I have
but I agree there is too much of a problem of guys being
naked or in a situation of being naked that causes someone
to think that something is wrong. If everyone would just be
themselves there would b no prob but unfortunately some
guys r just uncomfortable of the thought of being called gay.

I think nowadays, guys are more self conscious about their bodies. I totally agree with you about how it's stupid that it's taboo to change naked in front of other guys. I would be comfortable doing it as long as the other guy was cool with it, but it would be sort of weird to just change naked in front of him if he's not changing though.

Never crossed my mind to not get naked in locker room and/or shower. We are there to get clean and dressed. Could not care about being naked.

I don't get that either, I mean like what lots of other people said, we all have junk so it really shouldn't matter. Maybe it cause everybody is self conscious. Who knows

I actually prefer the uptightedness regarding it. I don't feel comfortable being nude, in front of anyone, regardless of their gender, age or whatever. Where I grew up, you had separate shower stalls that you got naked in, showered and changed in. You didn't see a naked person at all and that is much more comfortable than having to wrap a towel around myself just so I can get changed in relative peace.
In regards to your friend, maybe he isn't thinking about what you think of his boxers and simply might feel uncomfortable with the situation himself?

Dude, I totally relate to what you are saying and agree with you 100%. Americans can be such prudes about the wrong things.

That doesnt matter for me and my friends really . Whenever we wanna sleep at each others house we change our clothes in the same room and that doesnt really mean that we are thinking about something dirty lol
But i myself am a little shy to change clothes in a crowded place , like 15 guys you mentioned

The USA is a big place. The general impression I get is that there are pockets or liberalism (in the social, not political sense) for example in New York and LA and other places where people are much more up-tight, Even then I know that is a generalisation - I'm sure someone on here will be able to say "I'm not from one of those two places and we're pretty open here" or "I live in new York and we're really modest".
England is certainly up-tight compared to continental Europe. I have been to Holland and girls and women going topless on the beach was considered perfectly normal. I went to Germany and one lad running around a public park nude (when some joker has nicked his clothes) didn't seem to cause any adverse attention - most people didn't seem to even notice. Here I am sure he'd be arrested. The Swedes are famous for talking about sex just like we might talk about football or the weather and the Italians are indignant should the Police actually enforce the law about having sex in cars in public places.

even at schools where they don't shower nude, most kids are not this uptight. they ay cover themselves with a towel to change, but that is usually as far as it goes except the few very shy ones. as it is, we do shower after gym classes, so you get used to it pretty quickly, even though some still are on the shy side

Hi Justin,
I don't know where you live in the USA. Where we live, go to school -change -shower and so forth no-one is like this. Showers are required in our school gym class and everyone takes them naked. When we go to YMCA and other places I never seen anyone change in stalls.
Also we don't have a pool in my my back yard but some of my friends do. Sometimes when its all just guys we skinny dip.
So I can't agree that all the USA is uptight.

doesn't really happen to me like that. my friends and i don't care about changing in front of each other. we know what kinda underwear we wear and what we look like in them. there are a few guys in the locker room that change under a towel after the shower but most just get out and dress real quick

I used to be that child who would try to cover himself with a towel while changing in the community pool locker rooms. I was shy at first, but now I do not mind. I mean yes I am careful of who I am willing to strip in front of. The weird thing is I would rather compare sizes than take off my shirt because I hate being shirtless. I guess America is not that comfortable with this sort of subject. At least men, because the media glorifies the female body. Women are usually exploited for their bikini bodies and such. It is wrong yes. But there is not much we can do. You could maybe ask your friends why they are so uncomfortable or help them be more open to it

Well I know at least in my hometown this is not an issue at all, four years of gym and none of the guys cared about "modesty" we all grew up together for the most part. I talked to some of my friends that have graduated and will be graduating and apparently, its still not a problem. We had one boy who was openly gay, and we didnt care because we were all teenage boys, none of us were at either end of the spectrum of Large-small we were average. I know and have known that his was not normal but thats just how we were.

Just be you, change in front of them, and then walk out. If they pick on you, tell them they are the babies that have to change in a stall.

Same, people just seem kind of prude around here. Oh well, nothing you can't get over. Eventually in college those feelings of modesty go away.

Shrinkage size or size in general? If you're talking about shrinkage, obviously the colder Northern states have shrinkage more often. If you're talking about size in general then no, it should be the same. Comparing whites to whites, blacks to blacks, Asians to Asians, etc.
