I'm I the only one who thinks it is dumb to label people as straight, bi, gay etc. we are all just people and are attracted to whoever we are attracted to. Why do we need to place labels on our attractions?

I agree with you but labels help when looking to date people

I totally agree with you. I'm 20 and never really try and put a label on it now. I did when I was younger, would always say I was straight... But then be very open about experimenting with girls so I suppose that made little sense! Although it did. It was the idea of being labelled as something different because of who I was interested in that I was opposed too. I don't identify as bi, but I suppose I just don't give my sexuality too much thought. I'd only be labelling for someone else's benefit.

Labels are useful for people when dating and often make one more confident as to what they are.
However, they are not necessary and some people just feel more comfortable if they have one.

Unfortunately we just won't be able to get rid of labels since they do have a purpose. However, I think they are a complete hindrance in this day and age where everything appears to be more fluid and on a spectrum - especially sexuality. Labelling something that appears to be everchanging and difficult to place is a silly move but at the end of the day, people won't know your preferences if you don't stick a label on it. I think it's easier saying "I'm bisexual" than saying "eh, I really like guys and I'd probably marry one but some girls are hot sometimes."

We put labels on things to identify them as different from something else. I agree that labels are very overrated and have gotten to a point of being used in a discriminatory manner in all walks of life, but the only way around that is to educate the next generation -- I lost my thought --

There are biological reasons for sexuality. If there wasn't we'd all be bisexual. Or pansexual I guess, though I never understood that one. But it's why a straight person can't feel attraction for someone of the same sex, and why a homosexual can't feel attraction for someone of the opposite sex. I want to be bi/pansexual to expand my options, but I'm stuck being straight.
I'm not an expert though, no one here is, so I would suggest you actually research the science behind sexuality. Read some books on it or something.
