paging all Muslim posters and posters who are familiar with Islamic theology, you know who you are
first of all I must add a disclaimer that I'm not very familiar with Islamic theology so just bear with me here. as I understand it, the Hadith is a collection of sayings attributed to the prophet Mohammad later recorded by some dudes who were in his crew IRL, and it's considered by most Muslims to be the second-most authoritative text after the Quran itself. I'm aware of a very small percentage of Muslims who follow "the Quran alone" in a similar vein to Christianity's Sola Scriptura, but my impression is that the vast majority of them accept the Hadith as literally true.
my question basically boils down to this: how did Muslims determine the authenticity of these sayings contained in the Hadith? was there some kind of canon council that got together to sort out the legit from the [CITATION NEEDED]? from skimming various articles about the Hadith it seems like given the second- and third-hand nature of the accounts it would've been easy for some misinterpretation or outright error to end up in there ("Mohammad totally said that phuckphace is the best poster on VT, mashallah")
awaiting informative answers with bated breath
