Oddly, the idea of going on exchange has been pretty popular among my friends. We decided we should all take different language classes at our school and go its country so that we'll have more culture to share with each other. They decided to dump the country with the most complex writing system out of our options, Japan. I don't have a problem, sounds good to me, I can save up.... but... when should I go? I think to get everything my school offers, I would have to take four years: Japanese I, Japanese II, Japanese III, and Advanced Japanese. Fine with that, but we all want to have the "high school experience" there. So, can I save up and study for four years during high school and then go between high school and college? Would they accept that? Btw, I would be 18, but I think everyone else would be 17. Actually, does that even seem like a good year to go on exchange?

Yes
Also age of consent is 18 if you get my drift

If you can find an exchange for your plan, go for it. The best time to exchange is when you're mature enough for it, imho. A friend of mine did something similar, exchanged to Ireland not too long after highschool ended.
