View Full Version : I want a new name (non binary)

I need help. I want to choose a new name for myself that I can use as a nickname as I don't feel comfortable with my current female name (Amy).
I would only ask people/friends/family to call me it as a nickname before I come out as non-binary (if I ever decide for certain that I will).
If anyone has any ideas of a good name for me that's masculine or non gender specific, vaguely similar sounding to Amy, that would be great.
If not, I would really appricate some words of advice on being non binary or whether I even should come out. I don't know anyone personally who is non binary (except an agender friend of friend who I've never met!)
I have a few ideas below, but haven't felt a sudden "yup, that's my name" lightbulb moment in my head. My favorites have stars by them.
Alex
Ali
Kay/Kai
Ari
Ashley
* Lee
Levi/y
Avery
Aiden
* Avi
* Axel
Olly/ Ollie
But I like of of them
Thank so much!

In my opinion Alex is the best in my opinion as people from whatever gender have the name alex. Ashley and Lee also sound good.

On the name front, I think that you need to have a name that you are 100% happy with, especially if you are then planning to come out because you want to be as comfortable as possible. You may not find a name that jumps out at you immediately, but it will be down to personal experience with people. As an example, I would never name my kid Alex, but that's simply because there was a homophobic twat in my school called Alex. For a similar-ish name, personally I've always liked Aaron (or Aaren for the female equivalent), and they do sound very similar so can be perceived to be gender neutral, or masculine as Aaren is a less common name (however just a personal preference ;) ).
On the coming out side, if you are happy with the gender label that you've given yourself then I am very jealous of you and I think that you should come out... if/when you're comfortable to and you feel as though you are in a good environment (which you may already be in, idk). It sounds like you want to come out, but aren't sure, so I'd say good luck and go for it :). Keep us updated with your progress as well :)

Thank you to everyone for all of the helpful replies, Axel was the first name that I ever thought of when considering coming out. Even as a very young child I had an imaginary male twin for about a year called Axel so it's really a name that's close to me.:) Aaron/aaren is a really good suggestion as I love the way that it can be changed so easily depending on my "genderfluid" tendencies! Thanks to everyone

I would just like to say that before you choose your new name, you need to consider that once you've chosen it and done all the legal paperwork stuff, it will be hard to change again (and expensive). You need to be completely happy with it.
Personally, I think Axel is nicer than Aaron/Aaren as it is more unusual and is easier for people to spell right. I expect that people using the wrong spelling of Aaron/Aaren would be frustrating to you.

I think Axel sounds nice and has that unusual quality that people remember.

Thank you all! Axel is a name that I really did have an initial connection with and if I do choose to go by a new name, that will be it.

I would try out the name you feel you like the most (in this case, Axel) and just keep calling yourself that for a while. It may take time to identify with a new name, you can't just find one and be like "that's my true name!"
