aight homies I'm fuckin done with computers, not even kidding. this laptop is getting used as target practice real soon. ya know that feel when you pay a big bundle of hard-earned cash for something and it still fucks up on you constantly? my Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 has turned out to be no less than a one-thousand-dollar turd with red LEDs - read on, if you dare, for all the dirty deets.
I got this thing back in '13 and going by the specs it seemed decent - Ivy Bridge i5 processor, x2 GeForce 650M SLI, 8GB RAM, etc. I upgraded the stock hard drive with a 256GB SSD and used this opportunity to downgrade from Windows 8, which it shipped with, to Windows 7. I also tried to upgrade the WiFi card to something a little fancier, but it was then that I started to realize I'd made a bad decision. for the unaware, Lenovo's PCs ship with what's called a "BIOS whitelist" - this means most hardware upgrades are limited to a very short list of Lenovo approved devices (this is their way of wringing more shekels out of you) and if you install a device that's not on the list, the computer won't boot. this happened with the WiFi card, which I ended up having to return.
fast forward to earlier this year when Windows 10 was released. I received the free upgrade offer and downloaded it, and at the same time updated my NVIDIA drivers. here the problems began almost immediately - constant blue screens to the point of being unable to use the laptop unless I booted in safemode. over the course of a few agonizing weeks, I tried in vain to troubleshoot the issues - it seemed each stop error code was different every time. I narrowed one of the errors down to an NVIDIA issue, but the others continued. eventually I said "phuck it" and because I was too lazy to fuck with a Windows reinstall, I threw Ubuntu on it instead. worked okay, but then again I didn't buy an SLI-enabled laptop to run Compiz and Terminal, so Windows 7 made a comeback once I started to miss playing vidya in bed.
and whaddya know - more BSODs, none of which I'd seen in Windows 7 before. turned out to be the fault of a shitty NVIDIA driver, so I rolled back to a much earlier driver released in February. this solved the BSOD problem, but then Windows Update tried to update itself....and got stuck in a neverending "checking for updates..." loop. Microsoft makes a utility to troubleshoot and fix problems with WU, and guess what...it also got stuck. so now I'm stuck on a (very) outdated, pre-Service Pack 1 installation of Win7 that refuses to update. System Restore didn't do dick to solve it either.
it's a literal threeway of shittiness - Microsoft is shit, Lenovo is shit and NVIDIA is shit. you fucks best be afraid cus I'm a pretty big deal on the Internet, you got me?
tl;dr - don't buy Lenovo under any circumstances

I used to have a Lenovo, shit just starting to fall apart on me. I now have Asus, which is definitely an improvement, although it could be better.

Be wary of Windows 10. It corrupted my old windows install. I had to restore everything from backups. Make a very complex and multi-layered backup system, using Dropbox, onedrive, google drive, synform, RAID 15, external storage and NASes.
Only then will your data be safe.

Windows 10 already backs up your data to the NSA's super-high-speed servers so I'm good
update: reinstalled 7 and this time it worked fine, although it took 24 hours of my life that I'm never getting back. if Apple's prices weren't so gay and AIDS-ridden I'd be tempted to just say fuck it and pick up a Macbook

Macs are great, but personally I had to "abandon" mine because it wasn't powerful enough (for games and other uses).
W10 is pretty fine. At least if you deactivated Windows Update.
Although I will not update to W10 my old tower.
You know, W7 too sucks dry the NSA.

fucking lol at 2500 shekels for the highest-end Macbook Pro with Radeon graphics
idk what this "Intel Iris" shit is but Intel's onboard GPUs have never been that good and really have no business being in any system that costs more than 3 figures and isn't marketed to poors at Walmart

ayy lmao calling "support" in the first place, just lol
I'm not some supergenius with PCs by any stretch but I'd honestly rather waste a week trying to figure it out myself than spend a single minute on the phone with some hideous Ausländer who's probably 10 timezones away

Yup same problem. Lenovo sucks. After upgrading to Windows 10 there were so many problems I had to clean install windows 8.1 back. All data gone (Thankfully I had a backup!!!). Bought a Dell now, much much better.

So why don't you just download whatever is a stable older SP online?
Also tried updating your motherboards firmware? Sounds like fun though, I got to ask though wtf would you buy an SLI laptop? You need to bake a pizza with your lap top during times of emergency :) ?

You should sue them - it must've been a flawed production. :P

I think you are getting Lenovo mixed up with a little abomination by the name of Hewlett Packard
I used to buy and sell PC parts and lap tops, new & used, and jesus could you ever make money off of poor unfortunate souls that needed HP parts or just gave up and bought new laptops.
They even produced entire series of horribly faulty laptops 5+ years back or so that were just so shitty it defied belief, anything that could go wrong can and will go wrong with a HP
Even till this day they haven't bothered to fix most of their bullshit, still the most prone to overheating lap top around & probably the most retardedly accessible case as well, maybe ACER can compete on that front.
Lenovos are great to open up and fiddle with if need be though.

she outsourced like mad, laid off a bunch of HP veterans and pocketed the shekels. idk bro but every time I open a girl's laptop I see a clusterfuck of random icons over every square inch of the desktop - with that in mind it shouldn't surprise me how much shovelware HP's computers ship with

ayy lmao it does get a bit toasty but at least it doesn't glow orange like my friend's old MacBook Pro does, thing feels like an aluminium ingot fresh out the blast furnace when he plays a YT video fullscreen
I've looked into updating the MB firmware and seeing if I can tinker with the GPU voltages but after all the shit I've gone through I'm too nervous that I'll break something. no cash for a replacement if it fucks up on me (pls send your donations to

Bought a Gateway back in 2012. Came with Win7. Some bad downloading and it got a boot sector virus. Used it on Ubuntu for a while. Cleaned the virus problem using Kaspersky. Put it on Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Kinda crashed after that. Changed hard drives and now a happy Linux Mint user \m/. My PC is still going good except for a 20-30 min battery life.
From what I read above, I'll not go with Lenovo. Should I buy a non OS Computer coz they're like way cheap.

I've had a Lenovo mid-range laptop for almost two years and it has never failed me. Well, except for one time where the power button was kind of triggering randomly, but I fixed it.

Sounds like a total cluster fuck. Gotta love modern, reliable, easy to use, and most of all idiot proof and experience discouraging computers. This is why I prefer sticking to a mix of custom builds and tablets

I speak from experience. HP is so shitty that when it is brand new, even an i5 HP is slow from the very beginning with no software installed. Dell on the other hand, when just unboxed like the HP had an i3 and performed better than the i5 in the HP! Everything was fast with the Dell, the networking and boot ups, it was so fast that from now on I plan on either custom building or buying a Dell.
HP is such shit I still can't fathom why they still sell. Lenovo also has it so that a clean install installs all the fucking bloat ware back into a clean install. That same tactic is also what caused the Superfish issue, yet they don't do shit about it.
The HP that I experienced was $500, where as the Dell I tested was only $300.
Compaq is also shit.
TL;DR Dell is the best brand you can buy for the price.
