iOS or Android?
I'm not really aware of a screen recorder per se for iOS.
Check the Google Play Store if you're a Droid.
I do have a program called "Reflector" on my Mac which essentially lets me use the Mac as an AirPlay display for my iPads and iPhones so I can record them. It's meant for use in lecture halls and such, but I record with it all the time

I wouldn't know about any apple software - I'm a firm believer in android xD
So, I can help you along those lines.

Most cases with android devices, the phone has to be rooted in order for most software to work.
(If you don't know what rooting is, check out this: http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/how-to-root-android/
There are also plenty of other websites and YouTube videos that explain what and how to do so.)

I do know of three recording software that I have briefly tried and tested in the past. In now particular order:

1) AZ Screen Recorder - No Root by Hecorat

2) Lollipop Screen Recorder by Rivulus Studios (note, this is for android lollipop 5.0 +)

3) Mobizen - Game, Screen Recorder by RSupport Co., Ltd. (Requires android 4.0 +)
I haven't tried this one, but they have created ones specifically for Samsungs that I have tried called MOBIZEN for Samsung.

All of these currently have high reviews on the PlayStore.

Depending on your device you could run HDMI out of MHL and then use a capture card - that is what I do on the occasions I need to show someone my screen via skype or something
