So earlier today, I got a mail from my own email id. It was an obvious spam mail offering me money but the question is how did I get a mail from my own id?
Has this happened with anyone else?

I'm pretty sure there are ways to spoof email addresses, I've had the same before

Agreed. My basic deduction is that my id got hacked.

Run a couple of malware checks. Malwarebytes has a good free program. Also run one of the rootkit killers. Maybe two. They each operate slightly differently and will find things the others won't.

Well whatever you do don't take any money or send any money or even give any thought to any threats.

It's all dirty scams that appeal to your fear.

You can very easily fake email headers to make an email look as if it has come from a different address to that which actually sent it. Remember an email doesn't technically have to even be sent from a specific address. Web-servers can use this to send emails directly from the PHP mail() function, since it doesn't require an address to send email from.

It is easy to spoof email addresses.

To add a domain in CPanel you don't even need to verify. That is most likely how they are spoofing the email addresses.

If you use an email client, it should tell you the host name of where the email came from if the domain isn't verified (i.e. the DNS records don't match the server sending the email, etc).

So it is easy to see it spoofed if you use an email client like Thunderbird.

Stay safe!

Adding a domain in CPanel is primarily to do with the web server, not the mail server. Spoofing email addresses is just as easy as typing in the address you want to show though.

I recall now that that didn't work, it just showed the server's hostname.

I haven't used CPanel in about a year since I use VPSes to host my applications. Kinda forgot how it all works.

It would've been spoofed. You can choose to send from any address by setting it in the header. Use a decent email client. Ie thunderbird.

Aww...give me your email and I will put it in some spam databases for you! :)

Mods: this isn't an attempt to get him to contact me - this is a joke...

Ah yes, this email company is excellent. I think their spam filter is excellent, it replicates every spam email one thousand times and sends it out again.
