This thread is a long post that details my experience (so far) of getting circumcision OP last week. If you're thinking of getting it done, or reading this just out of curiosity, then hopefully my experience can give you some insight into what its like.
First off, if this OP something you're thinking of doing than take my experiences merely as an idea of what yours will be like - Don't take my word for it, always seek proper council from your urologist/doctor !
So about me, I'm a 16-year-old boy from New Zealand, and I was thinking of getting the OP done for just over a year. I won't go into my reasons for it as honestly, if you're thinking of getting circumcised, your decision to do so should be of your own accord - research into it, talk to your doctors, and don't let your self rush/be pressured into it! I thought about it and researched this extensively, which meant that I was more than calm about going through with it.
Now to the operation itself:
Consultation:
Research about which clinic/hospital and medical specialist you'd like to have the operation. Once chosen, call them up to schedule an appointment (I had my pre-op consultation 1 1/2 weeks prior to the OP). There, the doctor will ask you a range of questions, from your reasons behind doing so (personal, medical, cultural/religious), and will proceed to examine your penis. It'll be quick, drop your pants, and they'll take a look at your foreskin, retracting as far back as possible, and as far forward as possible. Then they'll talk to you about the procedure, the circumcision technique they'll use and if you'll be under local or general anaesthesia. Be sure to ask any questions! It's as much as your responsibility to ask, as much as it is there's to answer. Eg. Ask about how high/low and tight/loose your circumcision will be, etc. He told me I'd be under local anaesthesia and it'd be a forceps-guided circumcision, with dissolvable stitches/sutures.
Once the consultation is finished, they or a nurse will talk to you about how to prepare. If you'll be under local anaesthesia, as far as I know there aren't any prohibits on food/drink, and you'll be in and out of the clinic/hospital. If you'll be under general anaesthesia, the preparation may be different and it's likely that you'll be at the hospital for a day stay - they'll talk to you about that. Once that's done, schedule a date for you to get circumcised and sign some consent forms.
As for shaving your pubes - the nurse told me that trimming them down was all that was necessary, doing so a few days before the operation. Shaving completely might make your recovery a bit more itchy/irritating. Where comfortable pants (track pants) and firm but not tight underwear (something like boxer briefs) on the day of the OP.
Note: whether you're under local or general anaesthesia, I would still recommend that a family member/friend drive you and be with you on the day (It's only necessary that you be driven home by someone else if you'll be under general anaesthesia).
And by the way, I'd suggest you'd have a good session to jerk-off because you won't be able to relieve yourself for a while!
Operation Day:
Take a shower prior to the op, make sure you have whatever you need, and make your way to the hospital.
So, you'll arrive at the hospital, hopefully calm as despite how intimidating surgery presents itself - this is just a minor op and in proper medical care you'll be just fine. I waited at the reception for about 15 minutes, before a nurse took me into a small operating theatre. The nurse will greet you and talk to you about the operation, and just have a conversation with them to calm your nerves if you're still feeling anxious. They'll ask you to dress down (either just removing your pants, or they may ask you to put on a medical gown. (They'll usually be assisting the doctor during the op as well). So my doctor arrived, and had a short chat and the op was under way.
They'll retract your foreskin and mark the incision lines with a marker, then comes the local anaesthesia. DON'T WORRY!. The only pain that I felt in the entire operation was the first injection of anaesthesia! Its more of a short prick for about 2-3 seconds, then it kicks in to numb your penis. I had two other shots on the base and shaft if I recall. Once numb, they brought out the forceps and pulled the foreskin forward, they'll ask you if you feel any pain, I said I was fine so they went ahead. So along the line, they cut the foreskin off with surgical scissors. It's a surreal feeling that I could see it happening but couldn't feel a thing. Note: If you're queasy, don't look at it being done! (I was actually intrigued by it so I didn't mind lol). Then they used this machine (I forgot the name) that cauterized some of the blood vessels and help stop the bleeding. Then they'll begin the stitching/sutures, they were about 8 or so stitches around the incision/would line. Once done, they'll clean up the area, apply a first tight bandage around the incision, then a looser dressing to contain bleeding and protect the wound. That's it! The whole op didn't take longer than about 25 minutes. Wasn't feeling any pain whatsoever (local anaesthesia still in effect) and the nurse will talk to you about post-op care. I said goodbye to the nurse and headed to the reception (I was walking around like normal) to schedule the post-op checkups. Headed home with my dad, relieved and very happy :D
Post-Op Care:
The two main words that I'd associate with healing after a circumcision is to be gentle and be patient! Let your body heal in its own course, and the time frame for healing VARIES BETWEEN EACH PERSON.
I'm currently on school holidays so there's ample time for me to heal, but if you're getting it done earlier in the year, time off would be ideal but it is not necessary. It'll probably be a bit hard to concentrate in class and avoid any heavy moving/physical activities.
Day 1:
Even as the local anaesthesia wore off after about 2 hours, I felt very little pain (if any) after that. I was pretty surprised as I thought I'd feel some heavy discomfort, but my penis felt somewhat tight, but normal. I did notice some dried bleeding on the bandages but nothing I didn't expect. As with the doctor's suggestion, I was just on the couch for most of the day, keeping my penis level with my heart to lessen any bleeding/swelling.
The nurse said that I couldn't get the bandages wet on the first night, so I just opted not to shower and cleaned myself with face-towels, avoiding my penis. I was scheduled to see my doctor the following day to get the tight bandage removed and to replace the looser dressing.
When I researched it, I read that erections (especially during the night) was a common problem amongst teens/adults who were circumcised but I didn't wake up from any pain. I had a full night of sleep (and its been like that every night so far! When I do get erections in the day yes it does feel tight but only very mild discomfort.
Day 2:
So headed to hospital for the post-op check-up, the doctor was very pleased at how things were going so far, removed the tight bandage and changed the dressing. He told me to avoid masturbation for about 2-3 weeks and sex for at least a month. He said to expect quite a bit of bruising and swelling especially in the frenulum area and under the penis head, but this is just a normal process of the body - it should be largely gone in about 2 weeks. He also said to continue taking it easy, call the hospital if there's any sort complications/questions and I'd see him again in two weeks for the second post-op check-up.
I was allowed to take showers now, but I was told to still keep the bandages dry (you can use a plastic bag and a rubber band or even a condom). Also while you're showering avoid getting your penis get directly hit by the stream of water.
With that done, I was still feeling fine and went to sleep that night.
Day 4:
This was the day that my doctor suggested I take away the bandage, this is a step you need to be cautious with. I went into a tub and filled it with warm water to just above my groin area. Sitting upright, he suggested putting in some salt into the water, and let some of the caked blood (there wasn't much) wash off, and SLOWLY begin to peel off the bandage (there are tips on how to do this online). Again, I emphasise doing so slowly, because if you go too fast or pull to hard you might damage the new skin that's forming! Mine came off fairly easily since there wasn't too much caked blood, and I washed the area with clean water. Make sure to dry your penis very well! Use a smaller hand towel to dry (tapping on the area lightly) and I also used a hair-drier around the area. I felt a light stinging afterwards but it went away quickly.
I still felt fine, and my penis head had become quite used to being exposed prior to my circumcision (I kept it retracted) so the sensation of it against my underwear was manageable.
Note: Once you take off the bandage and see your new penis properly for the first time, it'll look pretty bad but don't be put off by the bruising and swelling! My swelling did increase quite a bit but my doc told me to expect it.
From now on, let your penis heal as it will take about 2-3 weeks for the incision to scab and heal over. You also won't have a proper idea of the "final result" of your circumcision till about 2-3 months, as the healing process/skin growth is slow.
Day 5 - Present:
My swelling is slowly decreasing and by now at Day 7, most of the cut line has scabbed and is continuing the healing process. I stuck to track pants and loose jeans as well when I went out.
As the days continue by around day 8 the urge to jerk-off will get stronger, but do try to put it off for a few weeks, at least until the stitches are more or less gone and you've been cleared by your doctor. Best to keep yourself busy on other things if the urges are bothering you.
So far, my experience has been very good, and I was both surprised and relieved that I've had a very smooth healing process. Though remember, this is just my experience and yours could be very different! I might continue to update with more posts - and if you have questions ask below .
