I recently met the very first person I ever spoke to on VT almost 6 years ago. We went through a lot together back then and now we see each other regularly now and are kinda a couple, but I wrote this shortly after the first time we met just over a month ago, so yeah, that's the context. Here's the poem.
Patchwork
Patchwork covers
To cover patchwork scars
They tried to tell us
That this wasn’t art
Candlelit vigil
To a life left behind
As I explore your scars
And you explore mine
So many years
We waited for this
Could almost believe
That it was all fixed
My fingertips follow
Each score and incision
A sharp intake of breath
A bleak admonition
That life is too short
We nearly weren’t here
But the candlelight flickers
And we have nothing to fear
Patchwork
Patchwork covers
To cover patchwork scars
They tried to tell us
That this wasn’t art
Candlelit vigil
To a life left behind
As I explore your scars
And you explore mine
So many years
We waited for this
Could almost believe
That it was all fixed
My fingertips follow
Each score and incision
A sharp intake of breath
A bleak admonition
That life is too short
We nearly weren’t here
But the candlelight flickers
And we have nothing to fear
