View Full Version : What's music to you?

I talked to my mother about music today. Not even something specific, just music in general.

I tried to make her understand how important music is to me. I think she got what I was saying, but she just feels different about the whole thing. She just turns on the radio so that it's not as quiet. It's barely more than a background noise to her.

To me, music is so much more than that. It's one of the last things I could give up if I had to. But I know that I haven't always been like this. I used to listen to whatever was in the charts and I guess it was mostly just so I knew what everyone else was talking about.

So I just wanted to ask how you guys feel about the whole thing. How important is music to you?

Music is something that is involved in every part of my life, really. I've never been a virtuoso and I have close to no musical talent but the music scene does mean a lot to me. Listening to it almost all day gives me strength to keep going, really. Having something that I have continually enjoyed from before I had mental health issues makes me feel like there's some hope for me because it reminds me of my sort of "past life".

Not only does it help me with day-to-day life, it also has made me become friends with such awesome people. Attending concerts and stuff and meeting random people that you can connect with through musical tastes is the best feeling in the world. I really do love going to concerts, I remember the feeling of every single concert I've been to and I love feeling that positive.

Well said. I really feel you when it comes to escaping mental health issues through music. Good music pushes all of your problems aside, doesn't it?

I also feel like I immediately bond with people who share my passion for music. It doesn't even have to be the same genre of music, just the general fact that they appreciate music just as much as I do is enough for me to like them a little more.

For example, my friend's girlfriend is kind of a bitch to me, but I can't completely dislike her just because she likes Rammstein as well. XD

Well structured noise and the culture that surrounds it. That's my definition.

Music is literally everything to me. No matter what kind of mood I'm in, there's always a particular song, artist, or album that I can go to in order to either match it or alleviate it. Whereas a lot of people today listen to a song just because it has a catchy hook or there's some viral dance to it on Vine or something, I actually appreciate the lyrics and feel like I can fully appreciate what the artist is trying to say, as opposed to just what it sounds like on the surface. That's why I like Eminem so much, I'm able to analyze what he says in his songs and I'm able to apply almost all of it directly to my own life. In a world where it's so hard to have these connections with real people, music can really help.

Sounds deemed to be pleasurable and title themselves 'music'.

Really, if you call it music, it's music. How are you going to validly go against one's opinion of what is art and what isn't? Why should or shouldn't this piece be considered art? How can something so intimately connected to the subjective be held down by an absolute? It can't, or shouldn't be, right?

At the same time, I do question if pop, rap, rock and other mass-produced media is music. It does sound good to the audience, but, on the other hand, does the produced consider it art? Do they consider it music? Is actually some part of your heart and soul in your track, or is it all a product of an industry attempting profit?

I look specifically to artists whose beats, lyrics, and style, among others, are not really of their authorship. Is JB's, Minaj's, Spears', or anyone else's music a vision of theirs or is their voice simply a means to produce the marketable product that hundreds of people are collaborating on?

I'm a virtuoso so basically I would be an entirely different person without music. I wouldn't even have my username on here.

Music is basically everything to me. Before I got into rap and writing, I didn't have an outlet for my emotions. Now though, I've expanded beyond just beats and words on a paper, but now it's a feeling; a memory; a perspective. Music is so much more than what some people explain it to be. Music isn't just a sound, and it isn't just lyrics. It's an experience. Even the "shittiest" of music (ex. mainstream pop or rap) still has a story behind it.

It's weird how much of my life music is involved in. It's literally gotten me through the shit times and it's a pretty good way of calming myself down (yeah, chuck on some deathcore and I can literally go from so frustrated and overwhelmed to normal in a couple minutes). I used to feel some weird superiority over people because of the music I liked and I'm really trying to change that "ew no if you're not into this then your music taste is shit" mindset. Recently I've gotten into a lot of genres outsite of the rock/metal scene and whilst music isn't my absolute everything anymore it means a great god damn deal to me and I don't know if I could go the day sane without my ipod.

Music isn't like something that I'd say keeps me going, but it's my number one love. And when I say music, I mean actual music, not just some random sounds coming from an Apple Mac in a club or someone talking fast, it's actual singers, singing actual lyrics to actual instruments. It annoys me when people think I'm strange for liking stuff that's not in the charts or whatever when I know why I like that, but they don't know why they like that.

Why shouldn't sounds coming from an Apple Mac be considered music? Why only real instruments?

What do you mean by actual singers? What makes one a singer or not?
If they sing fast, it no longer counts? What if they sing really, really slowly?

What are actual lyrics? Are there bad lyrics? What about no lyrics at all?

You know, people find you strange for whatever reason, but why do you find and music that doesn't conform to such a strict definition, to say the least, strange? I mean, if you think about it, almost all music nowadays is digitally mastered, possibly on an Apple Mac. And classical music doesn't have lyrics, but I don't anyone doesn't consider that music. Or, assuming you're talking about rap and electronic, why aren't they music? Because you don't like it? That's not very nice :(

I think I can say music now is everything for me. I was in really bad condition for about a year, and then I found muse, they kinda saved me, cause my life has a purpose now, and its to see them live. I like what Matt Bellamy said about music, that "there's something in music which is obviously beyond language itself. It's communication in its purest form", and its true, cause when you're in a concert, with thousands of other people and they all sing along, i can't explain that feeling. And that just keeps me going, that one day i will be with these people, singing along cause i've listened to that song million times before and it means so much

I can totally refer to what you're saying. A few friends of mine say it's a waste of money to buy concert tickets, but how I look at it is that you don't just buy some piece of paper, but an experience. And this experience is often worth all the money in the world and more.

Music to me is anything with feelings meaning anything you can tell how the person is feeling singing it. Ex "stole the show" it's just speaks to me lol or bob Dylan yeah yeah I'm probably too young to hear or know him but my older brother showed me him and his songs are amazing. I guess I like everything from Edm to hip pop to Adele to rock

Music: vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.

In this last year or so, music has left a massive impression on me and has helped me through a lot of situations I didn't think I'd catch myself in. It's helped a lot. I got into a lot of metal-and-metalcore-type of music when I started hitting a low point and although most find it difficult to lsiten to, I found it easy to listen to and relate to because the lyrics are powerful. It made me feel better.

People say that they get the same experience when they listen to rap. And when I say rap, I don't mean the songs that talk about getting completely smashed on the weekday or messing about with girls, I mean the ones with powerful messages that rappers portray through their music. To be honest, rap isn't all that lyrical anymore.

Music is so important and so healing to me, and has been since I was little. I have a lot to say about it but I'm not gonna blab on, sooo yeah it basically serves as a huge self-help kinda thing for me. Music...is the background to the foreground of my life. Music is a gift of words and sounds. Music is an engine runner and a peace bringer. All in all, music's just there for me, when nobody else is.

Music to me forms a big part of my identity, and of course to be more specific classical music. In the past 5 years, I've found that not only listening to music but playing it has helped me emote what I'm feeling to others. Essentially, it's not what the composer of the song wants you to make others feel but what you express from yourself to others. I find it's all about what you feel and what you want to say to others. Whenever I can't concentrate or don't feel well in general, music just helps to make it all dissipate. Music just takes up so much of my life and means so much to me I wouldn't be able to live without it.

It's an art form. It's emotion harnessed into sound. A series of notes and chords strung together to create something beautiful, exciting, grave, chilling... Whatever emotion or feeling an artist can extract from within their heart, and express to you at the fullest level. True music is nothing short of art.

Music is very important to me too. I live for music. It says things words cannot. Music allows us to express what we can't say. It's just amazing. I listen to/play more classical stuff (all of it; baroque, classical, romantic, some contemporary). Without music I don't think I would be anything, it has saved my life, literally lol... it allows me to go into many different emotions at the same time! I can't really say how I feel about music, I guess that's why music itself exists...

Music , makes and reminds my memories and it downlifts or uplifts me emotionally . Most of the people have thousands of pictures and videos so they can have something to remind their memories but i just play an old song and i remember everything from the past .
Among the genres , EDM music has been the only genre which gives me a weird positive energy which affects me emotionally . And that was even really helpful when i had depression .
I personally cant spend a day without listening to music :)

Music to me?

It allows me to let emotions flow out of me. I have certain pieces of music I will listen to if I need to calm down or just let out sorrow.

I've had 5 year's worth of violin lessons up to grade 7, I've picked up piano to a grade 3 standard and messed around with the guitar, flute and sax.

I always found it hard to play the violin with 'feeling' which caused much... annoyance to my teacher lol. But it wasn't until I found out quite recently that I could channel emotions into my playing which turned into a handy wind down. For example, Ragtime dance and Hungarian dance could end up sounding mournful but then if I happened to be particularly worked up, romance in F could be very - fiery 😂

For me music is an escape. I can use it to change my mood (most of the time), or as a getaway when thing get overwhelming. They also bring back memories, as I've found that I will tend to binge on an album/artist and then move on, and by listening to that music again reminds me of that time/person. For example La Roux/Little Boots brings back the smell of jigsaws and feeling of control, as I used to sit down and complete Puzz3Ds for hours whilst listening to them.

I use music as a way of remembering the past like certain songs or albums relate to certain events for me. So the end of the music from Gladiator reminds me of my nan's passing and I know it sounds soppy but its how I deal with stuff like that. Just put it to music.

I love it!

Music can help you get through difficult times. It also can be there for some of your best times:concerts, parties etc. Its been very important in my life. It also can say things I don't know how to say.
