Stupid Friend

I stumbled across this area of VT and I could not have found it at a better time because I really need your help.

I have this friend (who will be named steve for story purposes), who thinks its ok to go behind peoples back and talk shit about them. Steve literally spoke shit about me to my girlfriend, terrible stuff about my girlfriend to me, and the same with my friends. And to top it all of, he thinks he has done nothing wrong. What can i do without physically touching him to help with my problem? Thanks

Ignore him. If he's bitching about everyone to everyone else, people are more likely to believe that it's just his habit to say shit about others rather than actually believe the things he says. Give it a little time and you'll probably see him getting sidelined by everybody which I think would be more effective than beating him up.

Like everybody else said, he doesn't sound like hes your friend at all, friends just don't do that, and it sounds like he wont be anybody elses friend for long either when they figure out what he is like. Stay away from people like him.

There's no point being friends with someone like that. Talking from personal experience, people that breed negativity are best released before you get too attached to them. Seriously, the poison they bring will just fester and grow for years to come if you do not just cut the ties now.

There's a very good chance that if Steve is talking badly behind you and your girlfriend's backs, then he is doing the same to others around him as well. People will see this and eventually not have a very good opinion of Steve themselves. It's probably best to take the high road and ignore him as best you can (and I realize that is difficult when someone is talking shit about you), and all the talking he likes to do will backfire on him in the long run.

You do nothing in this situation but play the waiting game. Be passive, be polite, but avoid confrontation with him, and ignore all rude and inflammatory statements from his mouth.

Although keep an eye on him, it sounds like his reputation is important to him which indicate he/she is an egomaniac.

He could be dangerous, so be cautious of him, especially this day and age.

i only ask because if you and your girlfriend did terrible stuff to each other, and steve just finally told you two it does make his actions more noble.

but if he is making stuff up, the best you can do is get in front of it and tell people about the untruth and then freeze steve out. if all the people he is making shit up about do this it;ll be worse than anything you could do physically.
