You don't know why kids (people) date? There's tons of reasons, I'll start with a few.
- you like each others company
- you're (sexually) attracted to each other
- experiment sexually/hormones
- status (guys think better of you and girls think you have something cool lol)
- you have similar interests so you have a (close) friend to do stuff with
- you're bored
- you think society expects people to date
- if you're going to ever get married, you might as well start "practicing"
- TONS more probably

Maybe you should clarify your question a little better, because if you are asking why people are dating in general - then the first answer you got from someone else seemed perfectly acceptable. I'm not sure if you are asking why people date in general, or are you asking from a sexuality standpoint (why you just see boys dating girls, or just see girls dating boys)...but honestly, your question is pretty vague. Most everyone here wants to help you, but it's confusing when you reject what I thought to be a normal answer. It makes me think that Harrier and myself (and other people, most likely) are going to misunderstand what you are asking.

In a general sense, I will expand on what was already said - people date others for a few reasons. As already mentioned, they are attracted to each other physically (and sexually). Also, most of the time the person you date is someone you feel comfortable talking to. Not that there is anything wrong with sex or making out, but a lot of people want companionship and someone they can relate to - whether it is sharing feelings or common interests.

Either way....Puberty for All  Relationships and Dating

This is troubling because of your incomplete thoughts. From what I understand, you want to know why girls show their friends affection differently than guys do. Girls can kiss each other if they know each other well. They hold hands, hug, and kiss each other's cheeks. Not every girl has a girlfriend and not every guy has a girlfriend. Remember that some girls like girls and some guys like guys. You can never be 100% certain who is dating who unless you ask.

I'm not quite sure what the OP is asking, but assuming it is what SillyShyGuy is suggesting, then I guess that it is just the way many modern cultures have evolved, and how they affect different traditional gender roles.
Girls are stereotypically more affectionate, and will show those emotions more intimately, even to friends, where as guys are stereotypically not meant to show emotion, let alone be affectionate to friends, for fear of their 'masculinity' being compromised. It could even involve the way society perceives sexual orientation, with girls being more fluid, and it being unacceptable for guys to be anything other than straight.
