Why do parents look down on masturbation + pornography?

I was just wondering why parents get angry/upset when they find out that their boy masturbates? Mine personally have been very supportive, telling me it's okay and normal at this age to search for "the stuff," just to be careful not to find anything weird, but why aren't all parents like that?

In general, I don't think masturbation is frowned upon, here in Europe at least, altho I know some parts of the States can be quite old-fashioned. Porn, however, can be seen as giving off all sorts of negatives, from sending the wrong messages about sex to the treatment of women as items. I can honestly say I agree with these views, and I would ideally not want my kid's being porn viewers, but I am realistic and I know it will most likely happen.

I agree with PinkFloyd. It could also be how some believe that porn websites can lead to viruses on the computer, although an ordinary site can have them as well so I don't really agree with that opinion.

Some parents just have trouble accepting their kids are growing up. As for porn, it gives you an unrealistic version of sex, and that isn't where you should be learning stuff.

Perhaps for some parents, they do not see pornography as "real love" ,and that it is a poor representation of how kids should view sexual intercourse that results from a loving relationship.

My parents are pretty religious, even though they don't go to church anymore. I'm pretty sure they don't like masturbation, so that could be a reason why some parents are not for masturbation.

the problem with people today is that they give kids the bare minimum of information about themselves. these kids grow up and don't know what to do about pretty much anything. Sure, porn can be a dangerous thing at times... but honestly, if parents won't educate kids on sex and things, how do you expect them not to turn to the internet. porn can help kids learn what they need to do when that time does come, as well as find people who think similar of them. if parents were open and answered every single question asked, this site may not even need to exist.

Yeah I agree, plus our generation of parents might not have had these resources when growing up so tey are hesitant of them. Our generation is more used to it so it's not that weird of a topic or resource to use or talk about.

Imo, I feel that porn should not be as frowned upon and not allowed to teens. Sure it shouldn't be promoted but if someone is curious, let them find out in safer ways

My mom and dad understand needing to let it go once in awhile, but they're both yes and no on porn. Of course I'm not open about it but they still acknowledge the fact that I might do it and look at it, so it's not a real big deal.

my dad doesn't mind if I masturbate, he's says it's normal as long as I do it alone. Porn he says is bad because he says most girls don't look that way and it's not real. not all parents want to be as accepting as yours (and mine) about their kids being sexual beings, its not that they cant be, its that they dont want to be because if they acknowledge the fact that their kid has reach a point to where they wre ready to be sexually active, they get scared and afraid -- for what I dont know -- the truth of the matter, it is what it is and there isnt anything they can really do about it. some of us are lucky to have parents who are open and accepting of us, and for those who dont have parents like that, dont let it deter you from being and doing what comes naturally.

my parents know my brother and i masturbate and certainly have never said anything negative about it. porn, absolutely forbidden. i'm sure they're happier i'm only having sex with myself and as others have said porn can send the wrong message about what a healthy normal sex life is actually like.
