View Full Version : So...my teeth!

Such a weird way to start a wonderful post, right? Well, surprisingly I am in a VERY cheerful mood...drove my new car to and from school today (not to mention today was payday!) Anyway my good day aside...

I was out for the first two period of class today because *drumroll please*
I got my bottom braces done. (Sarcastically says "yay")

Anyway I had the top done for about four months now (they had to remove some teeth before the bottoms could go on). I am happy that the bottoms FINALLY got on, but I forgot how bad the pain was. The tops were not so bad because I had a lot of room and it wasn't crowded. My bottoms...well...that's a different story.

Let me say this slowly. I am in so much pain that my face is sweating. I am almost to tears. I took pain medication but nothing works. I can't eat...trust me I tried. Other problem? When they did them my mouth wasn't big enough so they had to put some "blue" stuff between. This hardened and creates a gap between my top and bottom teeth so that I don't bite off a bracket or whatnot. Anyway. I can't chew food. I can't even drink, it all goes down my chin. I opted out of supper today, for the better.

So I guess my question is, is there anything on the face of the earth that could relieve so much pain? It's not so bad if it was like sharp and instant pain..but it's constant throbbing...like OMG! Anyway any advice would be WONDERFUL! :)

I had excruciating pain when I put my braces, I was 11, and only removed them when I was 14. At that time, my doctor gave me a certain type of wax that you can put between the brackets and the teeth to relieve the pain, but it only works on long term, and you can't eat while having the wax on your mouth. If you don't have the wax, I guess you can buy it on any pharmacy, I think.

The pains only last for two weeks, I would say, and start to dim as the time passes. Try to brush your teeth when you're having the pains, put some ice as well, it might help. In my case, most of the time I just tried to bear the pain, and I applied some wax as well, and it just went fine for me. I could eat and drink normally, though, even when I had the pains, you just have to make a little effort. Oh, and I'd suggest thinking about the beautiful smile you'll have when you take them off in the future. It's worth it, believe me. :)

my braces story is probably just as bad. they had to expand my palate before putting my braces in. very painful. as for your pain? the pain meds should be doing their job though we all know how bad tooth pain can be... the best bet? tough it out. if you want to try, i think mint has a slightly numbing effect on your mouth as well as other leaves of the sort.

Give it a couple of days. After that you should be able to eat soft stuff like pudding, soup, mashed potatoes, etc. Try to add some ice and maybe take a different pain medication? When I got my braces put back on the pain didn't last as long but for my sister it lasted for a week.

When I got my wisdom teeth removed, I ate soup for a week. By the end of the week I was violent for a steak. But, it all payed off in the end and the holes healed beautifully. I unprofessionally recommend washing with saltwater or if the pain is really severe 3% hydrogen peroxide (not all the time as it can slow healing). Pain medications such as advil and/or Tylenol can help a lot too (yes you can take them together just don't drink while on them) ICE packs. Try to consume calories. I melted lots of cheese in my soup and drank protein powders.

I see you live in the same city as me. You can go to any Lawtons of Shoppers Drug mart and ask the pharmacist for some Tylonel #1's. They have codeine in them which can help with the pain.

What pain medication did you already take?

Also, if you can't chew any food, get some BOOST.

Sorry, but I don't understand what you're asking. You mean the feel after taking out the braces or before putting them?

Well, when I put my braces I didn't have to take out any teeth, but at first, when you put the braces, it will hurt, a lot, sometimes. The sensation you have (the sensation of having metal attached to your teeth) is not the biggest problem, and in a few weeks you get used to it and you'll just automatically pretend there's nothing there. The worst is, definitely, the pain, but it will also disappear. You just need to make an effort on those first weeks, and then you'll be fine.
