Each year, several Super Bowl commercials become the subject of controversy and scrutiny, usually for their sexually charged content.

This year, a Coca-Cola ad landed in the proverbial hot seat, but not for being lewd – it showed Americans of different races and ethnicities singing “America, the Beautiful” in a variety of different languages. After it aired, many took to various social networking sites to express their outrage at the song being performed in any language other than English.

What do you think of this? Is this outrage justified?

I saw that commercial. I really didn't see anything wrong with it. I thought it was cool how they did that
We have many many many people in the U.S., and many of different ethnicities.
That's just my opinion

the only thing I had against it was at first I thought it was an ad for amnesty for all the illegals in our country. And personally i don't support amnesty for that. However if the government wants to grant me amnesty for any and all future crimes then and only then will i support amnesty for illegal aliens (who in fact did commit a crime and technically commit a crime everyday just by being here).

I thought it was a beautiful commercial of what makes this nation great, and that is even though you can leave your home country and move anywhere else in the world, its the USA that will most likely accept you as an American (unless some areas of the south and west.)

There are many people here in the states that think the "American" way of life is being threatened, which in there minds is being Germanic or Celtic heritage, Protestant Christian and/or English-speaking. However, those people seem to forget that this nation was founded as a bastion of people who were shunned by there societies because of who they were or what they believed in, and a lot of the time for things they couldn't help, and I think the New Colossus poem in the statue of liberty finely describes what America is all about.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

And for people who want to force these things that are "American" down peoples throats, these "Patriots," well, if you want to look at someone who really ISN'T American, take a glance in the mirror. So, yes, I love the fact that Cola-Cola did a beautiful commercial with an even more beautiful rendition of America, the Beautiful.

I think it's ridiculous how upset people are about this. It's a commercial for Pete's sake! Now, I will admit that I am not pleased about the fact that I'm now required to take at least two years of foreign language in order to become eligible to most 4 year colleges when I could use that class period instead to do something I actually want to do, but that doesn't mean I want to stomp out any other languages. America is the melting pot of the world, and America just needs to wake up and realize it.

When I first saw what you wrote I thought maybe it wasn't completely appropriate since it is America the beautiful after all, however though the primary language here is American English, there are also many different languages and people of many different cultures. And after listening to it, I thought it was absolutely stunning and definitely made a statement.

It's a commercial, I don't see why people are getting upset by it. While it is a commercial it is pretty true, America has a lot of mixed races and is a pot of ethnics. It's also very beautiful to see a big corporation pointing it out and mixing it up, but they don't give a damn. They're a company wanting money, and I'll give them money for a good product, regardless on what others think about their advertising.

I agree with you, Austin. This country is a melting pot of many different ethnic groups and languages. I didn't like the commercial but I saw nothing controversial about it.

I didn't think anything about it. It was just saying America is full of different cultures who love America.

I didn't see anything wrong with it. People are free to think what they want of stuff, so I tend to ignore the arguments and let them do their thing.

If you want it to be in "america"s language then shouldn't it be in any one of the myriad of native dialects? Its an ad that is bringing up one of the few good things about modern american society, the fact that so many people of different ethnic backgrounds are all living together as a single society.

"im not racist, i just think that every body should speak MY language."
