I'm a newbie & this is my first thread- so please be kind. I have a scenario to present, & am interested in your comments. I am going to assume that we can agree that condoms are necessary to reduce STDs, even if the female is on The Pill. My father is a doctor, & he said that HPV hadn't even been identified when he was a teen, & HIV was only newly identified. Now, thousands of men are being diagnosed with prostate/throat cancer due to HPV (just as it has historically done with the female cervix & uterus). Who knows what is being passed around via sex that we haven't even discovered yet? Before you read more, I have to admit that I am intrigued by societal concepts of the traditional role of the male as opposed to the role of the female in an intimate situation. I suppose this scenario could also apply to two gay males contemplating anal sex.

And yes, I am a science nerd.

Please imagine yourself in either role, male or female & let me know your thoughts.

My scenario:

A guy & girl have been together for a few months & sexual play has progressed to the point that they have decided to have vaginal sex. Both are virgins. They have talked about intercourse, & agree that a condom is necessary. The big night arrives, foreplay has been enjoyable & successful. She asks him about the condom. He says "Yes, I brought a couple, here is one of them." She takes it from him, expecting that she will roll it onto his penis. She is then surprised to see that he has given her a female condom, & it will need to be inserted into her vagina before they actually have sex.

My questions:

1. Are you male or female?

2. Since western culture usually thinks of a condom as a male contraceptive, what are your thoughts about this "role reversal?"

3. How would you react in this situation?

4. Would you change your plans to have sex?

5. Have you ever seen/used a female condom?

5. Any general comments about the scenario?

Female condoms are not used very often in the USA, but I thought it might be interesting to "throw a curve" & request your thoughts. Thanks for participating!

Thanks for participating. (BTW, I have only seen female condoms via Google)

1. Are you male or female?

2. Since western culture usually thinks of a condom as a male contraceptive, what are your thoughts about this "role reversal?" I personally have never used one but it I was taught properly of how to insert it and everything, I wouldn't be opposed to trying it.

3. How would you react in this situation? I would be surprised at first but them relax and " enjoy" myself just the same if not better.

4. Would you change your plans to have sex? No, but I might want to use spermicide in addition to the female condom and I would buy some Plan B, as a last little back up.

5. Have you ever seen/used a female condom? Only seen them on Google, I have never used on with a partner.

5. Any general comments about the scenario? It is an interesting way of showing me how I generalize male contraception

1. Are you male or female? male

2. Since western culture usually thinks of a condom as a male contraceptive, what are your thoughts about this "role reversal?" i think that both the male and the female are equally responsible for contraception if it is agreed upon, so not only should he be expected to produce contraception, so should she. i think its a good scenario

3. How would you react in this situation? not quite sure how i would react

4. Would you change your plans to have sex? no, but it would open discussion

5. Have you ever seen/used a female condom? i have seen one

5. Any general comments about the scenario? its a good platform for any couple to discuss and plan for who should be responsible for the contraception.
