Hey All,
I'm from Tasmania (The little island thing below mainland Aus) and there's a bit of talk around here at the moment of the restriction Learner and P Plate drivers have. Basically, Learner Drivers and First Year P Platers are limited to 80kph, even on highways where everyone else is doing 110kph. Just wondering what sort of restrictions there are on speed etc. for learners around the world. I don't really agree with it, in most other parts of Australia Learners can do the same speed as everyone else. My main problem is other drivers getting angry and taking stupid risks to get around you.

Anyway

Where I live you're expected to drive the speed limits of the roads or at the speed of the traffic flow. I think it's a bit of a dumb restriction to have, as it can interfere with traffic quite a lot.

Nice to finally see another Tasmanian on here :D I am from Hobart.

I think that Learners should only be limited to 80km/h whist on their L1's. I think they need to learn to drive at faster speeds.

I am on my full license now, but I am always careful with P platers and Learner drivers.

We'll eventually take over aye Willam! haha

But Yeah, I think it's valid for on L1's, perhaps even gradually bring it up like 90kph on L2s, 100kph on P's, then 110 second year. Somewhat confusing but makes it so that people aren't flung straight into that speed!

Where I live, learners can drive at 100 km/h. I'm getting my L plates tomorrow, so wish me luck.

see your point but for sure it can be annoying and other drivers not making allowances wel they are at fault -

There are no speed restrictions in the UK.

Learner drivers must:

Display an L plate on the front and back of the vehicle
Drive under the supervision of a full license holder who has held a license for three years or longer
Not drive on motorways

There are other things as well...

Also, learners are liable for any offences they commit while behind the wheel

Where I live in America, the highway limit is 80mph. So roughly 130km/h. The first time you get behind the wheel, you go the limit. That's that. It's quite scary.

We can only have one other non family member in the car for the first 6 months with the license. It's not like there's anything on the license plate saying "new driver" or anything so it's pretty easy to get away with having more than one friend. :D

Hahahah Yeah, Same with the speed limit pretty much. All the speed cameras are set to the limit for all drivers, and are unable to take into account the L or P Plate, so unless it's manned by a copper. Of course though, I resist the temptation even being able to see lots of open road and having 50 million cars stuck behind me! Let's just say it was a slow trip up the coast pulling over all the time to let other cars past :P

Learners in New Zealand have to:
-Show the L-plates
-Always have a supervisor in the front passenger seat (must have held a full license for at least 2 years)

Other than a zero alcohol limit which applies to any driver under 20 years old (whether they be Learner, Restricted or Full licensed), and some restrictions regarding vehicle weight for L's and R's, that's all the restrictions we have. All drivers, including learners, can travel at 100 kph, which is the highest speed limit here.

It must suck to have to go at 80 kph maximum. I think increasing it to 90-100 kph would be at least more reasonable :)
