View Full Version : Voice and Sexuality?

My dad thinks that gay people have a very distinct voice... I don't really agree with it because I don't judge people by their voice. To be honest, it also inaccurate. For example there was this one kid I know from school who talks in the distinct way and this other kid in my grade asked him if he was gay. Do you think that sexuality and voice correlate?
He also says gay people talk like Neville from iCarly, which I find very offensive. :(
I don't agree with this because I think that anyone can be gay, but I was just wondering what you thought?

I think that this is a insisting subject. I am in the middle on this one. It is very similar to gays in the theatre. While not everybody in theatre is gay, it is safe to say the majority are. (i do a lot of theatre so thats why i use this as an example.) So while some gays have that voice, not all do. Also, while the majority of people who have that voice are gay, it doesn't automatically mean they are.

As always, it's a stereotype that may fit for some but not others.

Harley described it well, it's a stereotype that's been relentlessly promoted by the media that people come to accept as being a "gay" voice.

That's ridiculous. I know a bunch of gay guys at school and they don't have a "gay" voice. That's just another really stupid stereotype.

It really is stupid, but surprisingly, sometimes true. Like I said though, anyone can be gay regardless of what their voice sounds like.

i have met quite a few gay guys that do have the gay voice though. This of course does not mean that all of them have it but there are some that do. So I don't really think its wrong for the media to portray it that way especially since its mostly comedies where they portray it that way. And well comedies generally portray things like a caricature meaning exaggerated.

I have a deep voice but I like boys. My friend has quite a high voice, he likes girls. Simple as, your voice does definitely not decide your sexuality, sexuality is which gender(s) you find attractive! Some gay guys do happen to have a high voice and that's just the stereotype.

Just a stereotype. I'm very gay and i speak like your average Irish 13 year old (altho there a flash of South African showing through my accent)

Nope, I'm - probably? - bisexual and speak like anyother, though I have a very distinct laugh and a disturbingly great ability at gay-impressions. :P

I don't have a high-voice myself, though my voice and the way I talk is a bit "distinct", but this is because of speech issues I had faced early as a child that had caused me to have difficulties in talking. It's not like I asked to have these issues. Though, I am straight. I myself, find it stupid that others have to find something wrong about everyone just to bring them down. I still can't believe that we are in middle school-high school, and we still stick to the third grade tactics of name calling and labeling.

It's just a stereotype.

I think it's just a stereotype, and like all stereotypes, some people just happen to fit in.

I don't understand where someone's attraction to other people connects to their personality but maybe that's just me.

I will always and forever hate this stereotype. There is no biological connection between ones sexuality and their voice. Sure, some people have that "gay" voice, but there's plenty of gay people with a "deeper" voice than the straight counterpart.

Its a stereotype, but I do admit I do talk gay :)

My voice is not very manly and I was often called gay for having a higher voice. The stereotype sometimes is and isn't true. All stereotypes have some level of truth but are not always true.

It seems like a pretty accurate stereotype to me tbh
I have a lisp & people think I'm gay
& they're 100% right

I think it is odd, I have the "gay" voice, and I'm bi, so that kind of fits the stereotype, and I know a lot of gay guys with the voice, and only a few without it. I think a lot of gay guys talk like that on purpose because they didn't before they came out. I also know straight guys with that voice. I always had a "gay" voice, even when I was straight.
