Grammar in English schools, at least, is crap. No English teacher is bothered to teach students how to use whom or one. I think that it should be compulsory for every school. So when foreign countries teach their children how to correctly use grammar we think that they are crazy. Should we have to know the full grammar of our languages? I have a deeper understanding of German grammar than I do of my mother tongue, English, and thus my English grammar has been improved by using German grammer. Rant Over.

Ironically, the topic's name is 'Grammer'.

As for English in foreign countries, in Brazil's case, it sucks. Nobody knows how to interpret a simple text, all they can do is identify some clauses and adverbs and when to use 'then' or 'than'. And since the whole language is just fragmented into 'topics' as relative clauses or whatnot the whole subject is void of learning English. All we do is 'learn' grammar without being able to construct a proper sentence with it.

Portuguese don't have the same fragmentation as foreign language classes, but is so complex that people just end up using colloquial language. English itself is quite simple, so a class dedicated to the fine details of English might not be a priority at all. If anything, formal language and vocabulary should be pursued.

I agree with you. Foreign exchange students come to my school and embarrass other students by getting top grades...

I was taught grammar as a high school senior since I had a college course on English. It was imperative that we had proper linguistics skills for our writing.

In my opinion, people should use proper grammar all the time!

English is very important. It is the most common language in business.

Personally teaching grammar to the best of said teachers ability is obviously something that is needed and does currently be provided.

However even if you did one English class a day for 5 days a week for 4-6 years your grammar wouldn't be perfect.

In the U.S. grammar is hardly taught in public school anymore. What they teach is a lazier version that I don't think they're even sure of. It's pretty sad. I got to college thinking I had great grammar skills only to find out that I was decently mediocre compared to most who are just horrible. They really need to focus on grammar in schools a lot more than they are now.

It is true that grammar is a declining breed (strange metaphor I know). I've been in many a situation where I hear a teacher saying that 'spelling doesn't matter' when someone asks.
