I'm an insomniac and my mom refuses to let my doctor prescribe pills for me because they can be super addictive and have really weird side effects. I often have trouble sleeping and sometimes stay up nights on end because I can't sleep. I've tried many things, but usually nothing helps. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get a better night's sleep?

My answer is highly unscientific, but it works for me. There are 3 things I choose between.
I read. I start an old very pleasant movie and lie listening to it with eyes closed. Or I masturbate

Yeah im an insomniac too and honestly you can try to do things to help you sleep but sometimes they just help pass the time of being awake when everyone else is sleeping. I usually listen to music watch something on my TV, play Xbox, just lye on my bed and do the thinking for hours game, shower, workout, play instruments, text someone, play on my phone, masturbation. all of these honestly help a little foe me but I just do it as a busy thing

Well the first thing is I take it real easy a half hour or hour before bed,
and just chill out with just a small light on and do a little reading. Also
when i get times of insomnia I stay away from energy drinks and the like.
A lot of times I wake up after 3 or 4 hours around 3 am.
I do the chill out thing again and drink chamomile tea (SleepyTime brand)
with milk and honey in it and that usually puts me out.
Melatonin is a vitamin type supplement you can take an hour before bed that helps make you sleepy and helps you stay asleep. It might take a few nights for it to kick in.

When I can't sleep there is nothing that can get me to sleep, I'm up all night whether I like it or not. Best thing to do is just lie in bed watching TV and hope you fall asleep, I refuse to get sleeping pills either because of the addictivness of them.

I took over the counter pills that are effective and non addictive, but it might be different in other places. Also a personal choice.

This is prob going to sound crazy, but if you can, avoid TV, the computer, and your phone. I read online that anything that has a bright screen simulates the light that comes from the sun. The blue in TV light, LED light, etc. makes your brain think it's daytime, and tells your body that it shouldn't be sleepy.
If you really want a pill, there are good over the counter ones that don't need a doctor (you could probably even buy them yourself). But there are also really bad ones that don't work. My family uses Unisom and they work good.

been said a few times earlier but melatonin
is the natural hormone your pineal gland secretes
to help regulate your sleep cycle. In english,
your brain lets this chemical go thorughout your
body to help you fall asleep at night and wake up
in the morning. i believe there's supplementary pills
you can take which normally dont need a prescription
or you can try to supplement it in your diet. I know
things like mustard have a fair amount of melatonin in them.
