Ok. So I have a MacBook Pro, and it's dying slowly but fatally every day. I've already invested a lot into getting it to work, and it's not really paying off. I'm currently not in a huge rush, but I am starting to look at replacing my MacBook for something else. The biggest factor is money; My family is poor as hell so getting a new MacBook Pro or MacBook Air is out of the question. Does anybody have any suggestions for decently reliable laptops that are $400-500? All I ask is that:

It has a 14/15 inch screen
Decent RAM and Processor Speeds (at least 4 GB, 1.8GHz)
500gb hard drive
CD/DVD Player

thanks so much :)

I've got an Acer Aspire 6530. I don't know where you can get them from however.
I've had it since about 2011. It works perfectly. I find the Aspire series are great, for all purposes. Even light gaming.

Lenovo are fairly cheap and are usually pretty solid for awhile.

Try getting an old Mac. My brothers 2007 Macbook has been running for 7 years now and goes great. The one he had wouldn't meet your specifications, but a newer model would probly be cheap and run great.

I have a HP Pavillion G6. I got it 3 years ago and I'm still finding features that amaze me. It has 2.9 ghz, a shit-ton of memory, disk drive, webcam, number pad, 3 USB ports, hdmi port, crazy long battery life, when you push the power you can be logged in and typing in google in 11 seconds, really bright screen, easy to use, and doesn't over-heat in your lap. Best of all, I bought it new for around $350 on sale.

Go with a lenovo you won't regret it. And id suggest not getting a notebook and go with the laptops. Unless you really want to spend more money on the looks. When you could get a laptop for the same price with more hrtz and ram.

Not sure if you were looking to get another Mac or not but if your willing to try a PC I'd go for something like the HP Sleekbook

Look for anything Lenovo or ASUS, they make very good quality hardware, i prefer ASUS and my laptop has been running great from them for a while now.

Would you consider a refurbished laptop?

I've purchased lots of electronics refurbished... all three laptops in our house, past two desktops, my phone, my iPod, my monitor, our TV, some camera gear... most of the time, everything came looking great and working like new. I had issues with one of my laptops and phone, but I was able to get a replacement.

BIGGEST THING: READ WARRANTY/RETURN TERMS! The longer, the better. Some manufacturer refurbished units can be found with a full warranty, others with only 3 months, so read up and ask questions before buying.

Here's Toshiba's manufacturer refurb store on eBay ---> http://stores.ebay.com/Toshiba-Direct-Store/LAPTOPS-/_i.html?_fsub=3492514018&_sid=867264858&_trksid=p4634.m322

And here's Dell's manufacturer refurb site ----> http://www.dfsdirectsales.com/dell/laptops/ctl641/cp43620/cl1
And Lenovo's ----> http://outlet.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/outlet_us/LenovoPortal/en_US/special-offers.workflow:ShowPromo?LandingPage=/All/US/Portals/Outlet

I've had HP's, Dell's, Toshiba's, and used a VAIO before. I would go with HP and Toshiba. The one's I had where well built and lasted a long time. I gave my first HP to my aunt, and don't know what happened to me second one. (I loved that computer) I also still have the Toshiba's today.
