View Full Version : If marriage is about having children....

Ok so I was having a discussion(argument) with an online "friend" about gay marriage. His, and quite a few peoples (especially the church) argument against gay marriage is that the fundamental purpose of Marriage is the production and raising of children.
My question, which never seems to get an actual answer, is if gay people are'nt allowed marry because of the above, then why are, lets say, a couple who are unable to conceive a child allowed to get married? How about a woman who has gone through the menopause - should she be denied the right to marry?
I really wish people would stop using that ridiculous argument because it just plain doesn't make sense...

That's true, my parents couldn't conceive when they got married.

The fundamental purpose of marriage is not the production and raising of children. People marry to show each other the love that connects both of them, a love that is so strong that make them only one, a couple, inseparable, only divided by death. Whether gay marriage is right or not, that depends on each person's beliefs.

I agree with you, Marriage IS about love, but some people just dont have any real arguments against gay marriage so they make up useless arguments like the one I mentioned.

Yeah, I'd say that's not what marriage is about at all. I know plenty of people who are married and never had children. Marriage, in me eyes, is just showing that you love someone so much that you're willing to make the ultimate commitment.
People have kids out of wedlock all the time these days, it's not a big deal any more either, except to some religions, of course. I was born out of wedlock and my family rejected me for my first year, some religions are just ridiculous when it comes to marriage, gay or straight.

Marriage nowadays is usually for love but many years ago it wasn't. Most got married to continue the family name, make family ties, or to procreate. But no that marriage is becoming more love-based, it is mainly when two want to make their love official. The two don't want another, they want each other.

I'm with you 100%. Not to mention marriages have also been for the purpose of love/commitment and political alliances among other things, not just procreation (if that could even be considered a reason for marriage).
Not to mention nowadays there are ways for same sex couples to have children, if not with each other then with the help of outside support. I have a cousin who's having a baby with his partner via a surrogate, for example.

Just shows how fucking idiotic the whole argument against gay marriage is, I don't even understand how it's a debate anymore

The argument against this is weak at this stage. Marriage is for love (at least should be).

I'm all for gay marriage! People should wed simply because of love and devotion to that other person, not simply because marriage means having children. If it came down to that, the church and everyone opposing gay marriage should also hold prejudices against women through menopause, women who can't conceive, men who can't conceive, and any man or woman who has a disease that would cause harm to a child they had. And no one should do that. Therefore, GO GAY MARRIAGE!!!
