Ok well, up until recently, I've wanted to be a mechanical engineer. I've always been told that would be the best choice for me. But recently I've thought about pursuing a career in film directing. I'm actually directing a film this summer to see if people will take me seriously. What would be the better choice?

well, enigineering would be much more stable finacially, but film directing would be awesome. if you make it big you could hang with all the celebs. do what makes you happy.

Do what you're good at and will support you. I know everyone says go with what you like, its better to have a job you enjoy etc but its not going to pay for a roof over your head. I loved art and was stuck between what to do when college came around i over thought it to much and didnt end up going to college long story short i work at a garage now -.-. If you really want to persue film directing keep it as a hobby just dont close all your options.

I agree, while being a film director is great, it's really hard to get yourself noticed, especially if you don't have the right connections with the people in the business. You shouldn't give it up, just like Romaana said, keep it as a hobby. If you direct a movie that ends up really appreciated, you can put aside engineering and concentrate of that.
I'm just saying that you need a lot of luck, so don't keep it your only option
I would also like to be a writer, but that is not a very safe job, financially.

Depends on what you're looking for. Engineer makes more money unless you're top of the field in movies

Go for it, if you're passionate about it then go for your dreams. Yes you might be met with confrontation and people saying you can't, but all the greats get that. Also what's the harm in doing both? Then you've got something else to fall back on if everything goes pearshaped. :)
