Azumanga Daioh and Aoi Hana are slice of life but geared more towards girls. Gravitation is a good one. Claymore is the one I'm watching at the moment, it's not slice of life but it's fantastic!

I definitely second going for Angel Beats. That was the first anime I watched (last week :P ) and it got me hooked!
Apart from that, if you want something a little more lifelike, all I can suggest is Free! considering that's the only complete series that I have watched apart from Angel Beats

I'm not really familiar with a lot of slice of life style anime, but Bakuman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakuman)is sort of slice of life-ish, and it's pretty good.

RWBY. It's only just finished it's first season, but it's awesome. Voice acting is cringe-worthy at times, especially in the beginning, and there's some awkward animation issues every now and then, but a lot of it is really good. Fight scenes are incredible, storyline is good, soundtrack is great, has a ton of potential. It's also made by the guys a Rooster Teeth (So it is an American anime), which is always a good thing. :)
Watch each character's trailer before you get to the actual show, though.

I second Bakuman, excelent anime. Absolutely adore it..
Other good anime in general are;
Sword Art Online - Fantasy
Dog Days - Fantasy, quite camp/gay more aimed at girls
GA Art Design Class - Short, cute
I'll edit more into this list when I remember them but I have quite a list.

Dennou Coil, a good sci-fi slice of life.
Henneko, a not so very ecchi anime that is nevertheless really good.
I'd really recommend Steins;Gate and Tengan Toppa Gurren Laggan, and also Future Diary.
Also, anything in the "Completed anime series" category from my blog I'd also recommend (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/blog.php?b=40479).
