Im currently a junior in high school and will eventually start doing college applications and interviews soon, but I was wondering if they would ask if me if I have a mental illness whether in interview or app. Should I just flat out say that I have suffered from depression and other mental problems, would that hurt my chances of actually getting accepted? Are colleges discriminate against mental illness? And I know there is a written essay portion that asks about how you overcome problems and such in your life, should I mention it in there because it has affected my grades in the past before. Im just not sure if thats ok to talk about.

There is no reason to mention it, so don't. They shouldn't discriminate against you for it, but if it comes down to you with your illness, and this girl without one, they might. Same goes for scholarships, unless they are looking for people with mental illnesses, of course.

They're not going to ask you about it, because it's too personal even for college admission offices to ask, surprising as that is. If you handle it well and your essay reflects you in a positive light, then go for it. But it's a fine line, because even though colleges will still give you a fair chance, aren't always as understanding as you'd like and they may see "I've struggled with depression, which affected my grades" as an excuse rather than a reason, even though it's legitimate.

It's up to you. I'd honestly ask your counselor about it.

Take care :)
