Somewhat following from the Death Penalty thread.
If I were to ask you what a human life was worth, what would your answer be? Many people would simply respond 'priceless' or 'you can't put a value on life!'
But can't we?
If I murder you, let's assume I get 5 years in jail for it. Your life is now worth a measly 1825 days.
Now let's assume I get the death penalty. Your life was worth the REVENGE of taking another?
What do you think a life should be worth? This isn't strictly crime-related this is more sociologically based.

And how do you determine how much a person is worth?

Somebody's worth, to me, is earned through their actions.
Serenity

And how do you determine that? How many years does someone deserve for every good action they've ever done? How many years does someone deserve to lose for ever bad one?

I'm not speaking in terms of numbers, I'm speaking in terms of quality.
Example:
You have some person who is out raping and mudering people versus somebody who is making a positive difference in people's lives.
Person B, to me, is worth more than Person A because they have a bettter quality of action.
$2,027,094 according to that web site, lol

So if I kill the rapist, his life is clearly worth much less. I shouldn't go to jail right?
In court we should clearly cover the dead persons background for every sentence?
Also just because I said sociologically doesn't mean "what their worth is to you" it's for society as a whole as to what should be placed.

You are making assumptions and putting words in my mouth.
If it was self-defense, no you shouldn't go to jail.
If you just felt like killing the person, then yes you need to go to jail.
What happens in the courts is out of our hands unless we are in the jury and have the details of the case.

You can't put a price on a human life of any kind.

No one deserves to have their life taken no matter the crime or the person you can't put a price on anyone's life.

I personally have no problem with the death penalty
in certain cases
I don't think it should be taken lightly
but I do understand it
As far as a price on a human well...nobody would be the same
A modern day Albert Einstein for instance would be worth more then a modern serial killer and rapist
It depends on what and how you contribute to society i think...

Then what do we do when I kill someone? There's no price to pay? (If you see what I'm getting at)
And to the person saying I put words in their mouth. YOU DO CONTROL what happens in a court room. You're part of society, without a society there would be no norms or values to base crime off of. So as you ignored, should the punishment go up or down depending on WHO was killed?

Well in Canada we haven't had the death penalty for a while. Though it sounds good that we're giving people a fairer treatment there's still those cases that nagg at you... like with really bad people. Bad people that even in your own mind you honestly wouldn't mind seeing them die. It's pretty messed up but true in a lot of cases...

Life has no value. Life is life. You can't put a value on something like life, it just doesn't make any sense. If you take a life, doesn't it make sense to then take your life, to even things out? But then what do we do if you take five lives? We can't take your life five times. :/

I did answer your question, this is what I said:
I said even if you killed a serial rapist just because you felt like it, then yes, you need to go to jail, but if it was in self defense, then no you don't go to jail.
And why are you guys questioning what I think?
You asked a question, and I answered it,
So don't question me because you don't agree with me.

You're being oblivious, that wasn't my question.
It's not JAIL or NO JAIL.
By your statement that all life has seperate and individual worths, do you feel that jail time or other punishment should be determined by the value of the life I took?
and Underground_Network, you kinda hit the nail on the head as to when it becomes...what do we do now? :P

Sorry, I just didn't get the context that you first put it into. Thank you for clearing it up though = )
No, punishment shouldn't be determined by worth because you did what you did and you shouldn't get special treatment because you're worth more than somebody else, or they are worth more than you.

Okay so just to FULLY clarify, you're saying that in the court house all human life should be equal, correct?
(No I'm not leading this anywhere or trying to trap you, just fully clarifying :P)
Zephyr

Correct, in a court of law, we are all equal.

Okay so now that you've shared your viewpoint that we are all equal in a court of law, what should punishment be regarding taking an equal life? What about two?
