I hear a lot of people saying "girls do it too, just as often if not more" and things like this but then others say that some girls do and love to but there are many who don't. I can think of a few girls who I am pretty sure (for various reasons) do not masturbate whereas I can't think of even one guy who I'm not 110% sure that they masturbate.

Shall we settle this as best as possible by seeing what girls here on the forum have to say? Guys feel free to pitch in about what you think etc. :)

Girls masturbate just like guys masturbate. I think the frequency and stuff just depends on the individual.

From the discussion ive seen on here and all of my experience the average of girls do it less than guys. Ofcourse everyones different, Some guys may only do it twice a week and some girls may do it 3 times a day.

I think that masturbation is pretty much universal. I consider masturbation to be a fundamental biological function. Healthy sexual release is as important as eating and drinking properly. Without it people tend to go a bit crazy.

There probably are people in this world who don't masturbate. But I think one has to defy one's own instincts to not do so. I would postulate that people who don't masturbate are either deeply uncomfortable with their own bodies, deeply uncomfortable with their own sexuality, or adhering to some sort of moral belief system (religious or otherwise). Or some combination of the three.

I did find some interesting information on this subject in The Journal of Sex Research. (Hooray for having access to a world-class research library! :P) The article, "Masturbation Practices of Males and Females" by Ibtihaj S. Arafat and Wayne L. Cotton talk about some of the differences between males and females with regards to masturbation. The article reviews some previous research on frequency of masturbation and says this: the studies above by Kinsey et al. (1948, 1953) show that it is extremely common among both males and females of all ages. Kinsey reports that 92 percent of the men masturbate to the point of orgasm at least once during their lifetime (and this may be an understatement). and this: Other researchers showed that 60 percent of the females masturbated at one time or another in their life.

The authors of the article then talked about some research that they did, where they surveyed hundreds of college students about masturbation and reported the results. They found that: Of both sexes, 75.86 percent (330) of respondents report that they presently masturbate, and 24.14 percent (105) that they do not. More males (89.13 percent) than females (60.98 percent) masturbate. These figures very nearly coincide with available data from Kinsey,et al., cited above. As far as frequency goes, they found that it is pretty much the same among males and females. It obviously varies from person to person. The other interesting differences they found were that many more women than men report having more intense orgasms from masturbation as opposed to sex. They often found that 2x as many women (compared to men) report feeling depressed after masturbation, which could be due to society shaming women for masturbating.

Sorry if I got a bit too academic there, but I hope I answered your question :P. Check out the full article if your guys have the time. I found it pretty interesting.

I think it's fair to say that more guys do it and guys tend to do it more. That being said overall perception is probably a little skewed, and the gap probably isn't as wide as perception or surveys say due to guys generally feeling more comfortable discussing it openly and the expectation that they would.

Girls have a stigma that boys don't about it. People all do it as equally as others in general, nobody's usually willing to talk about it in person generally
